View Full Version : Huge price difference in rear glass.
jr68 Feb 18th, 06, 01:59 PM I just had a new windshield and rear window put in yesterday on my 68.
The front was about $150 for the glass ( PPG ) and $50 to install , he wanted $600 for rear glass installed , thats like $550 for the rear glass alone.
So I ordered my own glass from Classic for $139 , its the only one they offered.
What do you think the other glass was , nos ?

What do you think the other glass was , nos ?Hard to say,It may have been LOF ,and he was proud of it.The rear is usually higher than the front but that sounds extreme
MrDanB Feb 19th, 06, 10:45 AM I owned a glass business here in Washington for a number of years...Rear glass (back-lites) are almost always more than windshields. The manufacturers typically make far more windshields than rear windows because it's fairly rare that you would ever need a new rear window. As for the price...He charged you a very reasonable amount on the windshield and labor. The back window should not have cost your glass guy more than 100-140 bucks! Ofcourse they can be a pain to install with butyl tape (if you go that route), but 5-600 dollars? very steep in my opinion. You can order date-coded/correct pices from the factory for less than that. Sounds like he was trying to make a healthy profit from you. The only way I could see that kind of $$ charged would be if the glass was rare to find, or he had a bunch of rust treatment to do to the frame before installation. Glad you got it taken care of!

icunjl Feb 19th, 06, 12:02 PM Did you look into Pilkington Classic Glass? All the correct factory lables could have been ordered. A late thought, but the glass is outstanding. My driver side glass imploded on my '67 Camaro rs standing STILL one night in my garage. I was devastated because it was original and factory tinted. Hagerty Ins. covered every penny and the install and allowed me to use the Pilkington glass as replacement. I was amazed at the exactness of the shade and correct factory window lables. Dan
67 RSS Feb 19th, 06, 12:18 PM I just ordered my 67 complete set- windshield is 165 tinted while clear backglass is 175- add $50 per logo from Pilkington classics. Backglass logo is close but not exact (dash added and lower font incorrect).
Gambitt Feb 19th, 06, 05:22 PM Several people on this board have had good luck with a seller on ebay. He will sell you all the glass for a first gen, tinted or non-tinted and he will even date code it correctly for around $500. Seems like a very good deal to me.
I have a brand new back glass I bought a few years ago...still in it's box. I gave around $90-100 for it...but I need new glass for my entire care, and it seems cheaper to just buy the entire set.

jr68 Feb 19th, 06, 05:37 PM Dano , the rust was repaired and the car repainted , all the clips were in place all he had to do is come and drop the glass in , all in my warm shop. He knew what stage the car was in so he anticipated an easy job. btw he used urethane adhesive.
MARTINSR Feb 19th, 06, 08:31 PM In defense of the glass guy, he may not be such a thief. There are a lot of people who wouldn't sell a peice of glass like that in years and years. He called HIS supplier who also doesn't specialize in vintage tempered glass and he got a price. He passed that price (with a normal markup) onto you and it was higher than a shop that does more of this business and knows more suppliers with better prices.
I have heard all to many times when someone says "They tried to rip me off" when the guy was just offering what he had available to him.

kmarron Feb 20th, 06, 11:42 AM Is there a web site for Pilkington glass?
Jonesy Feb 20th, 06, 12:29 PM http://www.pilkington.com/the+americ...ts/default.htm
I used them to replace my glass and the logos were perfect exact match to my originals. They asked for a copy of my window logo/date code and I emailed it to them.
