View Full Version : california registering without tittle?
RUSTY69 Feb 21st, 06, 03:49 PM not sure this is the right section. i bought my 69 from a junkyard, i do have a bill of sale, it sat there for 15 years, they stated that they did have the signed tittle at one point, now i will be using the tags that were on the body,(plane jane)...now when i go to the dmv, with my bill of sale, what will the id inspection intail?..both tags will be re-installed on the new panels...has anybody gone through this......oh btw, it is in out of state car that makes it that much more of a headach to register...thanx again...
JimM Feb 21st, 06, 03:55 PM you may be WAY better off transfering the title now, in the same state it was previously titled in!

that was my first thought, the massachusettes dmv told me i needed to have a mas, liceanse, and to get that i need a utillity bill in my name, and i cant do that cause im not working here, ...lol:clonk: ...if i need to pay more and go through drama at the dmv, i hope at least the end will result with a tittle, i contacted both agencies, and the california dmv said it was somewhat simple,(dmv simple?..HA!!)...i can trailor the car to the dmv, and the see that the tags match the bill of sale, more or less...
Joe Harrison Feb 21st, 06, 04:29 PM The Ca DMV may have you go to the CHP after the DMV does a few checks and gives you paper work for the CHP. No title and just a bill of sale could get really sticky in the state of Ca and once they got your vin in the system you could be in for a long drawn out process. I would go make an appointment with them (not one near your house that you will be going too. I would then ask, I am wanting to buy a vehicle body etc, and what exactly is needed to get it titled in this state? Can it be done? Tell them it's from another state (state you bought it in). Tell them everything but don't tell them you have it. Your just there for information so you don't waste your time or money. You may have to get a new title with vins applied by the CHP. I had to do this with a truck in Ca back in the early 90's. Tell them it's a classic and you would like to restore it etc. I am sure if you up front with them about everything except owning it right now you should be able to get all the info you need.
I also don't thing your putting the cart before the horse on this. Before you spend more money you need to know that you can title it. If you can't then ya got problems and spent cash you may not be able to recoup. There are title company’s I have heard of the specialize in this sort of thing. I was told a few weeks ago by a guy in Arkansas that a Chevelle I was looking could be titled through one of these companies for about $400.00. If this were true I would call one and see what they can do before the DMV. That would be money well spent considering the time "I" know your going to spend at the DMV in Ca. I think you will spend more on aspirin than that in that state. I hope I am wrong but I have been around the block at Ca DMV's many times. My butt is burnt up from jumping through all the flaming hoops those people have.
BTW:
All this is just my 10 cents worth and my opinion might even be worth less than that.

Johnny B Feb 21st, 06, 05:07 PM Rusty, A friend of mine had a similar situation with a '57 Chevy and used this company. http://www.broadwaytitle.com/ There are several companies that perform title search/issue but they tend to be pricey.....Jb
