View Full Version : 69 camaro disc brake conversion kits
Lance Feb 21st, 06, 05:15 PM I have a 69 camaro with 4 wheel manual drum brakes. I want to buy a front power disc brake conversion kit. I have been looking at different kits, but I was hoping someone who already has them could give me some advice. Was the kit you bought complete or did you have to still buy more parts for the swap? I am currently replacing the original 327 with a zz383 (still waiting for the 383 backordered) my brakes could hardly stop the 327 yet try to slow the 383. Its an accident waiting to happen. The car is daily driven so I need a kit that can handle it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks!
jackalope Feb 21st, 06, 07:23 PM Well if you are using 15" wheels i would suggest the baer serious street kit, comes with every nut and bolt, ran it in my car and never came near the limits of them, in fact ill be selling them real soon for a little upgrade, c6 z06 brakes haha
Lance Feb 21st, 06, 08:40 PM I emailed baer for more information on their kits & their kit didn't come with much of anything. No powerbooster, spindles, bearings, backing plates, brake lines. In fact it would be much simpler to list what they do include calipers & rotors. I was told I could piece the rest together else where. Maybe if I already had disc brakes on the front this kit would do, but I thought the idea of the kit was so I didn't have to piece everything together & maybe save a few dollars. Don't get me wrong i never heard a bad thing about baer in fact I only heard praise but for $1295 & I still need half the parts I didn't think it sounded like a good deal. SSB gets $799 for their kit & it seems complete. And before I get bashed I know the baer kit is better from what I heard but that price seems unreasonable to me.
Anybody out there have the ssb kit?
ezstriper Feb 22nd, 06, 07:35 AM do a search on ebay there are several co's that have complete kits, down to the bolts, lines, etc. Rob
DjD Feb 22nd, 06, 08:33 AM Check out www.touring-classics.com . I did a write up on my install of their front brakes in the sites tech area, links above on the top link bar. As for how complete the different kits are can really depend on the car you are starting with as well as your idea of the final product. You can get an 11" stock style kit that you unbolt your spindles and replace from there with the kit. Other kits offer the important pieces and it's up to you to find hubs or machine your spindles. It really depends on what you want...
thedugan Feb 22nd, 06, 11:25 AM Lance,
I got my front disk power conversion kit from the right stuff
http://www.rightstuffdetailing.com/
I ordered them at Carlisle and got an awesome deal.
I use 15" wheels and wanted a stock looking kit and something that I can easily get replacement parts for.
I would replace your brake lines too while your doing this.
Also rightstuff was great to work with.
thedugan Feb 22nd, 06, 11:27 AM Oh and do it when your motor has been pulled and before you put in the new motor. It's easier to run the lines and bolt everything up.
dawg Mar 18th, 06, 01:37 PM our sponsor GROUND UP has a complete kit for under 650
Salerno May 30th, 06, 05:35 PM I bought a complete front disc break kit from rodpartsdealer, an e-bay seller. They asked for my year, make & model (1969 chevrolet camaro), size rim (14"), and if the front end is stock. A great price @ $599 plus shipping. It took over 60 days to get the mechanic to do my brakes (I'm 54 years and simply decided to have a professional do it for me).
Guess what: I'm out $640! They don't work on 14" rallyes. I contacted anotehr disc brake dealer on E-Bay in Concord, Calif. A great guy and knowlegeable. He says these disc break conversion kits are made by really only one supplier (I know there are more than one); but his point was the
generic kits come from one or 2 sources.
They don't work on 14' rims!
I should have checked with some guys here at camaros.net: it may have saved me time & money!
Now I have to sell a set of 14x7 rallys AND a set of 14x7 rims!
ss dave May 30th, 06, 06:01 PM I have incredible stopping power in my 69. Went thru the new 11" power booster with my 12" Baer front and rear and was disappointed that they wouldn't lock up. Got a Hydroboost-lock ups no problem! Need at least 15" wheels with 12" rotors however.
