I am changing over my interior from red to black and I am thinking about covering the rear seat shelf with leather material. I am trying to find out how to remove the cardboard shelf so that I can cut the material to fit the curves. Does this just get glued in or is it clipped in? I dont want to break it getting it out...
Thanks.

There are two molds screwed into the corners by the window. On my car these pressed down on the board. I would lay down in your trunk with a flashlight and check to see if anyone else may have screwed it down, or clipped it down. If you have speakers, these are probably holding it down also.

The padded vinyl flap on the package tray that folds over the metal frame between the trunk and upper back seat is often glued down too. The glue on mine was so dried out it might as well not have been there at all.

Since this is cardboard, has anyone painted this and if so how should it be painted? Should I use primer, sand it, or use anything to make the paint stick better?

To remove the package tray, remove the rear seat and back. The cardboard package tray just slides in under the rear window trim and is held in place at the front by a vynal flap that gets glued down behind the rear seat. If it's a 69, the two corner window trim pieces are held in place by two screws in each. If you have a covering on the original, adding a cover may make it to tight to slip in under the rear trim. You may be better off by buying a new carboard tray and covering it.

Like Codi said in the previous post.....You are probably better off buying a new Deck panel, since your old one will probably be warped after all these years. You can buy a new one for around $20.00 already finished. Don't forget some new Jute padding for the underside.
