Time to revive this thread. :)

I'm a mechanical engineer working for Peterbilt (Denton,Tx) until Feb 2nd. '07 Emissions regulations have caused a major drop in production for all Class 8 truck manufacturers and I got laid off. I actually work in the HVAC/ Interiors group, but the cuts are being made across the line.

Before that was Poulan/ Husqvarna Chainsaws in Texarkana, and Friedrich Air Conditioners in San Antonio. The future may hold Fort Worth, Waco, Austin or San Antonio. Who knows where my family will end up next. All I know is, I'll be dragging my project Camaro with me!

A lots changed since the last time I posted on this thread (almost a year ago ;) ). 10 years telecommunications, remotely working on pretty much anything and everything. For 29 years I worked for a highway construction company and worked my way to the top. Then progress came, we were bought out and myself and 70 others were laidoff. Now I'm into repairs , additions, remodling and new construction. It is a nice change of pace.

Do the Fleet Farm chicks where you are wear the tight black pants and orange shirts ?
Where else can you get a Carhartt jacket , a rifle scope , hydraulic oil for the tractor and a 60 lb. bag of beef jerky all in one store ?

I work on offshore oil drilling rigs. Been doing it since I got out the Army in 1990. Been working the overseas part of it since 1998, and have been working back in Brasil since 2004. (I worked here in 2000-2001)
I work 28 days, off 28 days. Still doesn't give much time to work on the car, as I have 2 girls and a wife, a big place to try to keep up, I maintain 9 cemeteries (no one else seems to care) and work with my father on the side.
Never seem to have enough time.

I have it in my introduction thread, but, not much detail... I do several things, the most important of which is being the owner of Tainted Pink Productions which is a full service entertainment (mostly bands) agency. I personally am the director of entertainer management & marketing. We offer, of course, management, marketing, booking, press kit design & distribution, security, transportation (equipment hauling), and we also act as a mediator between bands and recording companies. I have plans to have a recording studio by 2009, and a record label by 2011, along with a live music venue to showcase the bands that we work with by 2009. Tainted Pink handles mostly metal, industrial and goth bands, but we have also done some work for choirs, rappers, comedians, and blue grass bands.

I'm also a body piercer and scarification artist. Piercings are my main focus, but I do tattoo machine scarification, dermabrasion (dremel scarring), branding, and cutting/skin removal. I'm in the planning stages with some other notable tattoo artist from NC on opening a shop that is a joint ownership because we're tired of working for shop owners that act more like greedy tyrants. We have a scheduled opening date of January 1st.

So thats what I do when I'm not babying my car...I'm a very busy girl, lol!

I wondered about that, I hear some areas are slow and others are not. Over here on the west coast we can't even begin to fill the jobs we have, the comany I work for has solid work for the next three years, three of the jobs are 20-30 floor highrises. It could get interesting when we need guys, I'm just starting about a 9 month project myself and hope I can get some guys out when I need them.
It could be worse for sure, but the way the economy is looking right now the work picture could tank at anytime, I feel sorry for anyone that builds houses, or residential electricians, times could be getting real tough.
Take care, :beers:

If you do residential work I wish you luck, but with a one man shop you should be Ok.
The election has nothing to do with it, the housing market is crapped out almost everywhere, and on it's way everywhere else, and we are basically one foot in a recession right now. Fortunately for me the commercial/ industrial end is the last to be affected, so long as the money has been allotted to the job.
Good luck to you, but a one man outfit should easily keep busy so you should be fine.

I haven't read through all of these yet, but the ones I have so far are pretty fascinating!

I'm an Operations Manager at an Intel R&D fab in Hillsboro, OR (University of Oregon MBA, class of 1995 - Go Ducks!).

Intel has been pretty good to me, but what it giveth, the Camaros quickly taketh away! Just plowed both my beginning of year bonuses into my newest baby :D So much for paying off some bills ... ah well, this will make me happier, especially come those warm summer days when we can get out of the shop and stretch our legs!

Mechanical Engineer.

Those of you who use cutting or heating torches (oxy-fuel, air-fuel), pressure regulators, gas control devices, etc... depending on the brand you've got, I may have had a hand in the design of the product you're using :) Unless of course they are really crappy products and you hate them... then they surely couldn't have been mine :D

Some days I hate the job and the people drive me crazy... but when I step back and look at the "big picture"... I'm really quite lucky. I've got a really great life with lots of security, and think I need to remember that more often than I do.

I'm with you on that one, I am an Industrial Engineer / Process engineer for Dana Commercial Vehicle, we build the big axles that go under the OTR trucks, firetrucks, buses, etc. HUGE ring gears, off highway (another division) actually has an axle that sports a 24" ring gear. Ours aren't quite that big, but an assembled head weighs in at around 600 lbs.

We just came out of bankruptcy, so maybe things will get a little better. I sure hope so. But most days I can't believe this place is still in business with all the silly things made possible by an enormous corporation.

I suppose that means i should get back to work . . . :D

Great thread... I can't believe that I just read 33 pages of posts. I'm a mechanical engineer that is employed in the aerospace industry as a structural designer. I've designed major structure (wings, fuselages, doors, etc) on corporate jets (to transport important people), commercial jets (to transport the rest of us) and military vehicles (to deliver things that go boom in the night to the bad guys). Never thought I would end up here but 17 years ago the auto industry was not hiring. Life's funny that way. In my job I have to make things lighter, cheaper, faster, more durable, and cram them in a small space... each of which comes in handy when working on my '67. From the looks of the talent on this board, our metallic babies are well cared for.
