Just curious to know what folks on here do for a living. I know that some peoples profiles list their occupation but even that is vague. So, what do ya do to make the money to pay for the toy(s)? Be specific if you can... ie not just "im in the computer business" Just thought it would be interesting to know. I'll start: Im in medical sales. I sell operating room based products that surgeons (mostly urologists) use in the O.R. Spend time both selling to the urologist and working with them in the Operating Room.

I work for Exxon/Mobil as an Active Directory Infrastructure Specialist and Network Administrator. I take care of over 530+ Active Directory Servers worldwide. For those that don't know what an Active Directory server is, it's a centralized server that authenticates logins for all users on a network. That's not all the servers do, but it's one of the primary functions. I basically sit around all day logging into servers remotely all around the world fixing issues and designing ways to make things function better :)

Certifications: MCSE 2003; MCSE + Messaging; MCSA; CCNA (Cisco); A+; MCP; etc.....

I'm a computer programmer/systems analyst (UNIX is my speciality), in charge of the application that does patient billing for Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, and all of it's satellite hospitals in the Metroplex. I also do alot of project management type work, alot of break/fix troubleshooting on several different kinds of systems, and I'm oncall 1 week out of every month for about 15 enterprise wide computer systems. Basically, I sit in front of a computer screen all day in my nice, comfy cucible in a downtown high rise and surf the web, which is why ya'lls medical bills are so high...............it pays good too! :D :D :D :D :D

I'm unemployed at the moment. After 25 years with Honeywell(Aerospace) as a buyer, I was laid off last August and I have been enjoying it ever since. Now I am back in the job market and have been on several interviews. I turned down one job, did not think it was the right fit for me. I've got another interview today and several other prospects for next week.
Wish me luck!!!!!!

I am a manufacturing engineer. I am currently working a contract for Boeing developing the build plan for the new 787 airplane.

Small world. We've supplied the sleweing ring bearings for the AIT/Vought fuselage assembly cranes going into Charleston and Wichita.

I'm the Manager of Field Services for NSK Corporation. Our group is responsible for everything to do with the bearing after the sale. We work on some interesting projects. The first photo is a slewing ring bearing for an electric arc furnace. The second is the 2nd gen Camaro that was built up and then melted on Monster Garage.

I am and have been for 22 yrs., the materials manager in the facilities department for one of the larger private universities in Boston. We have approx. 150 tradesmen and 450 custodians. I get to spend about $3 mill. a year making sure the tradesmen have the material they need to make building repairs. (plumbing, HVAC, carpentry, lock, electric, grounds, etc.) Also, maintaining our computerized inventory system. In addition, I am also manager of our emergency control desk which is open 24/7/365. This is for students and staff to call for emergency service, ie: toilet clogs, lock outs, no heat, no a/c, power outages, fire alarms, ceiling leaks, etc. for 350 buildings on campus. The desk handles approx. 25,000 calls a year for emergency service.

I'm a corporate pilot for GEICO Auto Insurance. We are now the third or fourth largest auto insurer in the US, depending on what you use to determine size (# of policies or revenue). :)

I have a small 2-bay performance shop that specializes in classic GM cars and trucks, although we do the token Ford and Mopars from time to time.

Engines/trannys, and suspensions mostly. We can squeeze in 6 cars comfortably.

We have done complete restorations, farming out body and paint work, but the time those take is not "cost effective" LOL.

Before that I was a tech at GM dealerships for more than 25 years

This is our 8th year in business.

I work in Quality Assurance for Greenway Medical Technologies. Greenway's solution, called PrimeSuite, is a Web Browser-based Ambulatory software suite that includes Integrated Practice Management (PrimePractice®), Electronic Health Record (EHR) (PrimeChart®) and Managed Care solutions.

In other words, if you go to the doctor, our software does everything the physican's office needs from electronic medical records to submitting claims.

I make sure it works the way it is supposed to and try to break it before it goes to our clients.

When asked what I do, I usually use this quote from Ray Stevens "Haircut Song," It goes like this:

"I'm a logger - just up from Coos Bay, Oregon. Been toppin' trees - quite possibly the tough...(cough) toughest man in the entire world".

I'm actually substitute teaching (K-12) while I finish graduate school. I also own a business (commercial/industrial cleaning) that I have had for almost 17 years now. When finished with school, I will be a certified school counselor.

My plan is to drive the Camaro to graduation. (13 months away). :)

Basically, I am hired as an independent third party to evaluate floor covering complaints (carpet, vinyl, laminate, hardwoods etc.) and try to determine and explain all aspects as to why there is a complaint by the end user (i.e. holes, lines wearing etc.) and any corrective measures that can be done.

I am a Senior (opposed to junior) Business Systems Analyst for a major financial firm. Basically means I put what the users want their systems to do into language the programmers might understand, then test it to make sure they got it right, then make sure the changes are implemented correctly. I also have to manage users' expectations, since they expect their desktops to do all of their work for them, including answer customer calls and make coffee. Before that I did the same for a firm that manages pension benefits, and another that sold medical malpractice insurance.

Fun? No, not really, at least not anymore. But it pays the bills. I'm almost missing my 7+ years in auto service. I really just miss 24/7 lift & alignment machine access.

Well I think I have the coolest job. Not getting down on anyone here I just love mine.

I have been on the Tomahawk Cruise Missile Program since 1983. We build em, from the ground up. I have been in many positions from parts sub assembly to flight test operations and engineering test. I am now supervisor and loving what I do and who I do it for. I work for the War Fighter, but I am paid by Raytheon. Our Missile is the wepon of choice by the Navy. Our Final assembly site site that I work at been reconized with the Battle E from the Navy. For weapons support and reliabilty of our weapon and it's sytems. No other defence contractor has ever had this given to them that "I" know of.

Well, my line of work certainly isn't as glamorous as many of yours, but I love it.

I work with my dad and uncle on the family farm in South Dakota. I grow corn and soybeans and am involved in everything that goes with operating your own business. I buy and sell commodities, manage crop production, run machinery, manage finances, troubleshoot and fix mechanical and electrical problems, and work in the shop cutting, welding, and wrenching. Alot of days I do some or all of these things and more. My uncle has a '64 Vette, my dad has a '58 fuelie Vette, and I have the '69 Camaro they drag raced in the 70's.

This is a great thread..!
This proves that any job that pays the bills AND let's you own a 1st gen Camaro is the best job in the world! It doesn't matter if you are responsible for diapers or space tools, we all get the same glow inside when thinking about our Camaros.

I'm a 20 yr. SysAdmin, specializing in Citrix, SQL, SAN, VMware and custom application integration. Member of Security Team, AD and GPO design teams. Currently work for Guardian Mortgage Documents. Small IT firm that provides 85% of all closing documents to the Real Estate world. If your house was financed via Citibank, Wells Fargo, Countrywide, GMAC, GE or Fannymae, chances are we produced the documents you signed your name on 50 times. I work 2nd shift, mostly evenings from home with remote systems in Utah and Colorado. When it's not snowing, I get to play in the garage 'till noon everyday.

From bean counters, to garbage collectors to computer geeks, we all love the smell of 90wt gearlube in the morning...
...and speaking of NOS, wouldn't we all love to have our own Dentist next door!

Our racial discussions are about Candy apple, Powder blue or Fathom green. (..yeah, I grew up a ZZ, but married a hugger )
Our religous philosophies support Prostock, Custom anything, everyday drivers and Rust-buckets. (but we all pray for the #'s to match).
Our political beliefs support the death penalty for ebay scammers, and diety status for grease-monkeys with the right answers.

Camaro owners are the most sensitive men in the world.
Tell me you didn't tear up a little when seeing that "Monster Garage" car hanging over a pot of molten lava!!

Sort of in between careers right now.
CH-47 and UH-1 avionics mechanic by day, grease monkey part time by night.
Been in aircraft avionics for 18 years. First on attack aircraft, then rotory wing. 2.5 more years till I can retire. It includes repairing, modifying, and troubleshooting any and all communications and navigational equipment on the aircraft, to include all the wiring.
The grease monkey thing is a part time gig fixing whatever kind of vehicle rolls in the door. Tonight it was an ancient Subaru with a shattered driveshaft yoke and a Challenger car hauler with electrical problems.
I can't tell you which I enjoy more.

I am also a man in "burnished brown", and prior to that I spent a few years with a large north american defense firm(U.S. Army armored cavalry). and although I dont deliver anymore here's a hint to get your stuff first time thru.. just talk to your delivery guy or write him a signed "cya" note that lets him know its ok to leave your stuff wherever. Delivery attempt Notes = more stuff to deliver tomorrow.. which ends up making his workday/workweek longer. Trust me.. He'd rather leave your package than a note.

P.S. My dream job happens to be the ho-house piano player.

Im a Police Officer... you would be suprised how many cars I come across... One of them happens to be my 69 RS/L-78 #matching, no rust anywhere, stored under a house for 20+ years, bought for 6,500, which included a boat load of misc. chevy BB parts...

Off the top of my head I know of a few cars just sitting unrestored:
1) 70 chevelle LS6 w/orignal paint
2) 69 Camaro Conv.RS/SS minor rust Garnet red/red int. 4spd.
3) (2) 67 Corvettes one coupe, one conv. coupe is gone but the vert is ok
4) 63 split window
5) 69 Camaro SS 396 Auto
6) (2) Z-28's not much left been stripped by people.. owner has no clue
7) 68 Camaro SS 396 Looks orignal...
The best part about these cars is that you cant see them from the road, you would have no clue they existed! Trying to work on them but some owners just wont let go... need to go cash in hand.

I'm surprised after so many replies there is only a few of us - I'm an auto service manager for a multi line car dealer. It use to be a good job and there would be some laughs. It seems thats long since changed. My 1st job I had for 10 years till the dealership burnt down and was unable to rebuild. My 2nd job I had for 21 years till the dealer got old and retired (should have saw that coming). Then life got interesting! I was hired by a multi line GM dealer thats service CSI was a mess. It took 18 months to really straighten it out - then guess what - they didn't need me and my salary anymore. I have since had 3 jobs in 16 months. After 30+ years of GM expierence I am now working for a multi line import dealer. It seems that in this area import dealers are the only ones doing enough business to afford support people. I wish I could have stayed with GM products but I'm thankful to have a job with good people and a fair and supportive dealer operator.

I could've sworn we did this before a couple of years ago, but I could not find the post. Oh well, Tech leader (read supervisor) of an IT group for the Wall Street Journal. My group handles Mainframe OS, MQSeries, Enterprise Job Scheduling, Hitachi SAN and Legato backup (install and Admin). I bounce around with all these and make sure all the projects are on the right track. Yes, I have done the Tech work for most of them too, so I'm not just management! :) Been in IT from the begining, 1976! Been at WSJ for 24 years. Boy am I tired.

Lot of diverse folks here.

Currently I am a diffusion furnace tech (Chemical vapor deposition) for the biggest printer firm in the world. Also a part-time avionics tech on F-15s. Have been doing that for 20 years this year. This enlistment is probably my last. Started on B-52s in Electronic warfare and have worked EW/avionics on pretty much the whole inventory of tactical acft since. The F-15 is my favorite with the A-10 a close second. My camaro is patiently waiting to come to life after pro street is done this year(hopefully).
I also moonlight as a mod on the other TC ;)

Electrical and Instrumentation and Controls Engineer. 25 years working in nuclear power plants mainly. I've built them and dismantled 3 of them. Relocated two nuclear plant controls rooms during decommissioning, and changed their monitoring and control systems over to PLC's from their original analog based systems. Here's my last control room job at Connecticut Yankee.
http://www.connyankee.com/assets/images/Plantpictures/Mvc-015s.jpg
The whole plant (what remained of it during decommisisoning) was run from the screen in the center of that console.

After that job I worked on the Dig Dig for Honeywell in Boston for three years laying out and installing equipment to support the intelligent project control system that monitors events inside the tunnels.

Now I'm working for Simplex Grinnell designing Fire Alarm systems for everything from Hospitals, to manufacturing facilities, to schools.

I design injection molds for plastics. I worked for big corporate America for the first 11 years and started my own business. I've been in busness for 13 years now. I'm given a drawing or 3d model of a plastic part and I design the steel components that are manufactured and assembled to produce the plastic part.

I have designed molds that produce speedometers for Cat and Bombardir. I design the mold that produce the ABS sensors for Ford and Chrysler. I've designed molds for many different parts for Rubbermaid, DeWalt, Black & Decker, Hamilton Beach, etc. I was the guy that designed the plastic spout that they started adding to 1/2 gallon juice cartons back in about 1990. My other notable project was designing molds and installing all the equipment to produce 3 different sizes of tampon applicators for Tambrands. Each machine produced about 130 million applicator annually and we had 4 machines running.

Well, considering this is a "tha camaro forum", I think I have the coolest gig here. Not only do I get to build some of the coolest Camaros on the planet, but I get to do it with my 19 Y/O son (my youngest) and a few of his best friends from school. I bet you empty nesters may appreciate being able to hold on a bit after they grow up. It a special feeling when you watch these youngsters do something, that you taught them, and watch them be rewarded by their peers.

I am responsible for export sales to Asia and Europe for one of California's largest table grape growers (table meaning those you eat fresh). I have traveled pretty extensively throughout Asia over the past 17 years (China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand). I am fluent in Mandarin Chinese. I am also the proud father of 6 children, ages 17 to 2. Between work and home, the car doesn't get much attention and therefore sits parked in the garage most of the time, as it has for quite a few years. As it doesn't appear that my wife is going to contact the Overhaulin' staff anytime soon to come to my rescue, I guess I need to find the time to get the car looking like many of yours that I have seen on this site! My only question is this: How do you guys find the time to work on your cars?

I am part of the sales dept in a division of Pfizer named Capsugel. We are the world's largest manufacture of two-piece hard gelatin capsules with plants located worldwide and our Greenwood plant is the largest manufacturing site of its type in the world. www.capsugel.com
If you have taken a pharmaceutical product in a two-piece capsule the empty capsule was probably manufactured down the hall from me. Since we also have a good portion of the US Dietary Supplement business it's very likely each of you have taken a capsule that I have sold.
Prior to my eight years in the sales department I had a couple of years in the production department and then 15 years in a machinist/mechanic position. This technical training and experience helped gave me the technical knowledge to sell our product and to build a Camaro.
I used to cover the regions of India/Asia plus a domestic territory. I now have only an expanded US territory in the northern states stretching from WA & OR to WI and into PA. I travel occasionally, enough to keep it interesting.

I believe I am the only Auto Shop Teacher to post. I worked on fleet vehicles for the school system where I went to school. I went to work right out of high school in 1978 and 9 years later took my Auto shop teachers place at my old high school. I am now at another high school where I have been teaching for the last 15 years. 3 years left to go! Things have definitely changed since my school days. I enjoy working with the kids that want to learn but it seems there are fewer and fewer of them as the years go by. I have plenty of Camaro pictures in class and we look at "Team Camaro" tech forums and talk about possible causes and repair procedures in class. I also take cars to school that my friends at "THUNDER VALLEY CUSTOMS" build along with mine and it helps to stimulate their interest. Of course I jokingly tell them "NO FORDS ALLOWED IN THE SHOP". I have MANY ex-students out in the automotive field and one is teaching. It is rewarding to see these students moving on and continuing in this field. I'm sure some of them will be building Camaro's and joining TEAM CAMARO in the future.

I'm a Multiple Launch Rocket System Crewmember in the US Army. I ride around in a 30 ton tracked vehicle with 12 thirteen foot long rockets in the back. When I'm told to, I shoot them. I'm on my second deployment to Iraq, and I still haven't got to do this. Last time I was here (2003) I was on a task force sent to find Saddam's WMD and any other juicy things we could find. This time around, I'm driving an M 1070 Heavy Equipment Transporter System. Its a big eight-wheel-drive truck that pulls a 25 Ton trailer designed to be the primary hauler for the M1 Abrams Main Battle Tank. It's boring most of the time, but the IED's keep you awake for a while when they blow up. Can't wait to build my '73 with my fat re-enlistment bonus!!

Road tests, with the back up and turning. On my way to work (Raytheon) I pass by Lockhead everyday. They have a test track they run them on.

Now for rocket tests, and war head tests from our Missile, those are done at another plant that is about 5 miles from our main plant. They blow stuff up all the time, that would be a pretty cool job too. Just hard on the ears!! LOL

Shooting rockets is a lot of fun. I have yet to shoot a missile, as they're a little expensive. Unless you're shooting them in combat, its a rare occasion to to fire one. And, yeah, they're a little hard on the ears! Rocket exhaust that finds its way into the cab of the launcher is a little hard on the lungs, too!!

I am the Plant Manager for a plastics company that specializes in testing and manufacturing products for our customers. We make their thoughts and dreams become a reality.

We also have a line of multiple grade rubber products and heat activated expanding materials that we manufacture for molding and extrusion. We are busy.

I have always had a love for sports and have coached on a voluntary basis for the last 10 years. I became ASEP certified 2 years ago and started coaching Track and Field (Throwing events) at the high school level. I would love to coach H.S. Football but it requires too much time...someday. I had so many good coaches as a kid growing up that I can still picture and remember them. They have left a positive impact on my life and I hope that I too can fall into that catagory.

I just bought a new house and my Sales Manager is the MOTHER of the host Chris Jacobs for Overhaulin'. I dont think this will help at all BUT I just want to let you all know that my chances statistically have got to be better than YOURS unless if you live on the West coast! Phil

Some interesting careers you all have. Mine's kinda boring - I'm a statistician for a huge market research company. Been doing this since college (almost 13 years) and now looking to move back to AZ so I'm not sure what I'll find out there. I'd love to try something new related to automotive but I'm concerned I won't be able to afford the change in career at this point. Has anyone out there made a dramatic career change in their mid 30's and cut their salary in half (or worse)? And how did it play out?

I own a retail store in which we sell spas (hot tubs) stoves (fireplaces, inserts) and swimming pools. Being the owner, I am actually relegated to being the janitor, window washer, and chief-cook-and-bottle-washer. I am also a pseudo-consultant, semi-architect, punching-bag for "troubled users" for a software company.

My "Day Job" is as a senior buyer for a manufacturing firm. We make industrial shredders. I don't mean waste basket shredders either. I'm talking engineered to order, up to 1200 hp monster shredders you can (and do) put cars through among other things. (arms and amunition destruction, electronic scrap - yep we have explosion proof units too...) kinda cool. Sad to admit though, that although I can't name names...we service one of the bigger companies that does archiving for GM. And we serve them under our division focussed on information destruction...(sorry about that "missing" Chevy data guys...:(

Great post,

After reading about so many of the great jobs out there I'm seriously considering a career change!

Seems like there's a heap of Tech's here. I run a small IT business specialising in Apple Macs. We support design firms, Music studios, Advertising firms etc. Been running the business for nearly 6 years.

Best part of my job is I get to travel the world see a lot of places I may not have seen. Worst part of my job is I get to travel the world and see a lot of places I may not have seen.

I still vote for Scott Taylor's job "piano player in a whore house", as best job!

I am a bucket man in a two story outhouse! Wow that is sick. I really am an operations manager for a company that makes the wire with pin and clip that holds up the ceiling grids in offices. My company hangs over your head supporting the ceiling tiles in your office. I hope that we did a good job today, I would hate to think that anyone has had one land on their head.
