Is there a way to tell the differance between a drum and disc brake master cylinder by looking? This is for a 69. This may be a stupid question but I don't know.

There is clearly a difference. The master for a disc brake system is larger than a drum brake master.

sounds like I have the right one but I have to really stomp on the pedal to stop.

Try bleeding your brakes again, air in the lines is a symptom of a low brake pedal. What type of brake system do you have? Power disc up front?
