Thinking about buying a new air compressor and have been looking at 2 stage oil-free air compressors at Sears. Has any one used these or are they any good? Any information would be appreciated, I will need a new one soon, mine is about gone. Thanks

I have a Craftsman, 3.5 horse 15 gallon. Its great for small jobs. If i had to do it over I would have gotten a much larger one. Sand blasting is slow my grinder puters out and my cutoff tool does the same.
I just had my first problem in four years. It stopped building pressure. Anybody have a clue? I runs fine but just does not build any pressure. Is there a rebuild kit for it?

Thanks Tim I will be buying a lot bigger compressor with a 60 gal tank. I was just wondering if the new oil-free ones were any good. My old one is the belt driven oil type.

sixtsevnssrs, Sounds like either a reed valve has broken, or a screw from the reed valve has loosened and is holding the check valve open.Could even be the check valve itself has lost its sealing disk. If you hear a continuious hissing of air when the compressor shuts off its probably a screw holding the check valve open or the sealing disk is missing. If not then one of the valves (flat peices of thin metal usaully) has broken off. Parts should be easly had from the mfg'er.

Do a search for 'compressor' in here, I recall a very long posting with lots of great information discussing this very topic.

I don't know much about the oil free compressors, one thing I have heard is they are VERY loud. Sounds like they have a rod knock.

Look at CFM rating, that is the most important thing. If you plan on using an HVLP gun for instance, they use up to 16 CFM. A sand blaster I think uses even more.

Thanks Click. I read the forum you found. I went to Sears and bought a 2 Stage 7 hp oil-free 60 gal compressor today. It is one of the Professional Series so I think it should be ok. I will hook it up tomorrow and see how it does. I hope it isn't too loud like a couple of the posts said. I needed one and it seemed like a good deal for the money. I bought the 2 year in home warranty with it in case I have any trouble. Again thanks everyone for the information.

Hi Ol Blue,

Most likely your oil-less air compressor will be much louder than the oiled systems. I've had both. One thing that you might want to consider ahead of time is to purchase one or two of the ceramic piston rings that your compresser will use. Over time, the ring wears and allows air to blow by in which case you'll have to pull the top of the cylinder head off and replace it. It's always nice to have a spare now instead of searching later on down the line when it's a bad time. Good luck with your new unit. Paul

Hey Paul, What color red did you put on the RS/SS. My 69 RS/Z28 is Lemans Blue and the 69SS I am working on now is supposed to be Forest Green but I am thinking about painting it red. I am completely redoing the SS so changing colors won't be any problem. You sound like me I am always looking for 69 Camaros, they are just getting harder to find and more costly all the time. I didn't know that about the rings so I will take your advice. Thanks

I meant to say Fathom Green in the last post not Forest Green. The old 70 Nova was Forest Green, maybe I am getting old...
