Went to work on my left front fender on my 67 the other day as I'm getting ready to put the sheetmetal back on the car. I replaced both inner fenders as they had lots of rust. Two of the bolts that hold the front extension on the fender had rusted globs where the heads used to be so I basically had to cut them off. When I seperated the two, the back 5-6" of surface of the fender that mounts to the extension disintegrated.

There is also surface rust on the inside of the wheel lip (might be close to coming through) and the inside layer is peeling behind the wheel opening at the bottom a little.

I know I need a new extension, but I'm debating whether to replace the fender with a Goodmark unit or try to get the current one repaired. I may put it back together as is and let the shop work it when I get the car painted in 3-4 months.

Can a fender like this be repaired? Or are the Goodmark's good enough and maybe a less expensive alternative as they are <$200?

BTW....went an looked at a Taiwan panel at a local panel shop and it was bad. Thin, had a shipping/handling dent right behind the wheel, and didn't come with extension.....and they wanted $230 for it.....I passed.

My experience is that the fenders tend to rust right behind the wheelwells first. If you've got rust forward of the wheelwells like at the extensions, then you are probably better off getting a different set of fenders than trying to patch the ones you've got.

It's possible the import fender was an older one. I've seen some very nice stampings more recently carried by Goodmark although most of the repros come out of the same Taiwan shop. My car has a repro on the drivers side which is fine. I need to replace the passenger side and will go repro. Unless you can find a good used one, I'd have no qualms about repro.

I had a similar experiance. I answered a local add for Camaro fenders. They were repo's and he wanted $210 each. They had been roughed up. One had even been mounted or attempted. No extensions. The guy got insulted when I said you could get them new for $190. I passed too and hope to buy a pair at summer Carlisle later this month. No shipping and I can check them before I buy. Thanks guys. I think I will go with a new fender. I will just have to get to the paint shop a little sooner.

If that tax refund check was only $6000 instead of $600....... http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

I work at a Camaro parts supplier, and we have had lots of problems with 67-68 front fenders. They just plain don't fit! They do not line up with the doors, and the body lines aren't right. I would try to find a nice used fender, and work with that.
