I was looking for a new wheel yesterday and saw one in classic's book for around 90.00. It's a reproduction of the original comfort grip except it has a different horn emblem and the grips are hard foam. Just wondering what you think of them.

Thanks,
david

Was it ever decided if the "comfort grip" wheel was ever offered on a first gen?

Okay, first, let's get the name correct... ;)

In the press release to dealers, and in the April, 1969 Camaro ordering information packet, the NK1 wheel is referred to as "Cushioned-Rim." It was never called "Comfort-Grip." The "Comfot-Grip" name may have been incorrectly skewed from the tilt steering column option which was available at the time "Comfort-Tilt".

Anyway... The NK1 option information was released around April, 1969. Ordering information shows that it's the same black 15" wheel used for the 1969 Corvette. Since the information was released in April, the earliest build date for a car ordered with one would probably be May, possibly later.

Now the problem... When Chevrolet released option production number totals for the 1969 Camaro, the NK1 option was shown as "0". While there are tons of '69s around with this wheel, no documented paperwork that I know of (window stickers, shipper copies, invoices, etc...) shows the NK1. Therefore there aren't any "factory" installations known to exist. However, as this wheel was in production for the Corvette and other GM Models at the time (Buick Skylark for one), it's VERY feasable that these wheels would be "dealer" installed. Anything to make a sale, right?

So most First Generation Camaro "experts" believe that the NK1 Cushion-Rim steering wheel never actually saw the light of day in a "factory" configuration.

Let the debate begin...

:D

hahha whoa whoa whoa folks. Tell ya what I'll clarify myself. It is a grant repro sold by classic. I don't really care if it was in one originally. If i was worried about originality, I'd still have the inline 6 in my car. My question was has anyone purchased this one.
Ha! don't want to cause any trouble!

I have the grant "comfort grip" reproduction steering wheel which I bought from Auto Zone. About 3 years ago it was around $75. I like it enough, I am going to put one on our 68 convertible. The dish of the wheel makes it easier getting in and out of the car also. jack

wrong manufacturer and wheel, unreal. He was talking about the actual reproduction comfort grip wheels. The one we are talking about is offered from Grant, instead of OER. I've heard a lot of good stuff about the quality of Grant wheels. this one only resembles the original.

I've got a Grant in my '69. No complaints so far. I can't figure out why people are paying $250 for the OER one when the grant is $75. I couldn't tell a difference in appearance.

I agree, nice wheel, but isn't the diameter of the wheel rim larger than a GM comfort grip? Might be OK if you don't care about originality, but I wouldn't go as far as to say you can't tell the difference in appearance, I can certainly tell, and I'm no expert!

I have the comfort grip or whatever anyone calls it. Rick's First Gen parts calls it the Comfort Grip, and as much money as I've spent there, their name is good enough for me. I like it alot, think it looks great, very sporty, but I'm not a fanatic on original equipment (not that that's a bad thing!!!!!I don't want to start another big arguement!!!!)

I have a very good friend that has one on his 69 SS396 Chevelle. It looks great and has nice feel to it when driving the Chevelle and it looks great.
