: Block Numbers ?

I just talked to a previous owner of my car today. He sold it to the gentleman that I bought it from. He told me he bought it in 1982 and from which town, but can't remember the guys name that sold it to him, so my search continues. He said the guy that sold it to him just replaced the engine when he sold it. This guy owned a body shop and garage. I'm calling the garages in that town tomorrow that I found with google (only two) to see what they know about 1982.

Now, after that long introduction, I'm trying to find my original engine. Should be a 327 210HP, what would my block's numbers read?

My VIN is 124678N331439
9Y0002815 V0906FB (current block stamp)

I know the partial vin should have the 331439 and the suffix should be ME I believe.
I need some help. Trying to learn this stuff.

Your original engine may no longer exist. If it was running and replaced by a HotRodder, then all he would have been interested in would have been the block and crank, and there is no guarantee that those two pieces ever were together again. The other parts would have been deep sixed in favor of racier parts. That was the mind set of most high performance guys back then. Preservation never crossed their one track (1320') minds.

Dave,

I realize this and have figured that it will more than likely be the case, but I can't not try to find out if you know what I mean. Actually, the guy was building a '57 vette at the same time. It was a 283 fuelie, but now has a 327 in it... hmmmm....
I found the Vette, and talked to the owner, he is checking the block numbers for me to see if it's mine. I emailed him yesterday with the partial vin numbers, but would like more info to give him.

I can't help but think there is a chance that thing is down there somewhere, and I'd kick myself if I never tried to find out.

I feel your pain DVINNY, I've talked to the previous six owners of my car with no luck yet. The seventh previous owner is supposed to call me on Saturday when he gets home from the Bahamas. The last guy I talked to said he knows for sure that he (the guy that's in the Bahamas) is the one that took the original motor and transmission out. Good luck to you and I'll let you know how mine turns out.

That's coincidental, because I talked to more owners today and have a total of six of them so far dating back to late 70's. Three have told me the name of the gentleman whom owned it and took the motor out. I have his name and phone number, but when dialed I get the "Sorry, this number has been disconnected, no further information is available".

I'm gonna scream!!!!!!!!!!!!!
but I'm close.

One previous owner today thanked me for emailing her photos, she said it brought tears to her eyes and she is mailing me photos of the car from 1980. That's worth the phone calls right there. Her Dad passed away 25+ years ago, I spoke with his wife today, she remembered the car as well.

4 months later, and I've still not got into touch with that owner.

His phone number was changed or something.

He is about 2.5 hrs. from here, I'm tempted to take a drive. I would just love to know about the car.

There really needs to be an organized Camaro, want/have type of database website out there.

I'd say there are alot of people with engines that would love to find the car it goes to, or have a car and would love to find the engine, and I bet there are alot of past owners looking for their old cars.

Why is there no list site up yet? Or am I not aware of it?

I am in the same boat but just left the peir. I made one google search called the first number and bam I get the owner before the guy I bought it from. Turns out it was the grandparents of the young man I bought it from and it was his mother I was talking to. Now if this sounds good it may not be because it didn't sound like they were on talking terms. She was only interested in how much I bought the car from her son for and when I gave her a figure she didn't sound to happy. She said she would have her father call me back but I'm not sure I will ever hear from him. I'll give him a couple of days and call back again. I got their number and sooner or later they gota give me something. I am also looking for my engine and trans. ME or MM is for an auto and MK or MA is for a three or four speed according to my Camaro data book. If anyone knows a guy in Grant Michigan who's nephew just moved to Punta Gorda Florida let me know.

WOW,

hilarious that I found this old thread. What's not funny is the slow pace of finding info since I posted this 5 years ago.
I have had the 'Vette mentioned above looked at, it is not my motor. All previous owners thought it was still the original engine, but I did finally get to speak with the previous owner that was hard to get in touch with, and he had an engine overhaul done at one time, and he gave me a name and number to call for where the motor work was done.
I have had contact with the guy that owns the engine shop in that area where my car used to be. He thinks there is a possibility the engine is still in his building. His demeanor seemed that he could give a 'sh!at' about my search. I can understand from his viewpoint.
The guy I bought the Camaro from is retired now with some spare time, and said that he'll take a day sometime this summer and go over there with the engine pad numbers written down and see what he can find.

Supposedly, this engine shop guy has a big metal pole building full of engine components.

So, 5 years later, I am still holding onto that very very very small chance that the guy still has the engine tucked away in his pole building somewhere. It would be a long shot, but I figure stranger things have happened.
It would be a day trip or longer for me to go down there and look myself. It's about 3 hour + drive. But may have to break down soon and make the trip.

It's not like my car is a big block or rare car and the engine would significantly raise the value, but the fact that the motor might be sitting down there still drives me nuts.
