: New or Dye

I have some original red deluxe seat belts on hand and was wondering if they could be dyed black. My wife says no, because of her experience with clothes, the dye will fade or rub off. Just wondering if someone has done this before and might have an opinion if it will work.

Another option would be to sell the red belts and buy some repros. Thanks

Black are pretty plentiful. I would think red would be harder to find, and more valuable. Do a search here, guys have talked about using Rit, and then stablizing with salt brine. (if I remember correctly)

I was planning to redye my black ones, but after a couple of scrubbings with TSP they looked almost new.

I'd seriously consider selling the red belts and buying black ones. The red ones are more rare and there are folks that could use them.

Good point....I think that selling them would be better than going through the trouble of dyeing them. The repros that I've seen in the catalogs look pretty good, so I might go that route. Thanks again for the replies.

Black standard belts come up on eBay ALL the time - especially if you're not fussy about the date codes. You can get a full set pretty cheap if you are patient.
