What is the correct procedure in removing the drop top frame from the vehicle. The cloth is in most part destroyed. The big springs look like the hardest part. doing a complete resto so the interior is out. What's the first step?

If you are doing a total restoration I highly recommend that you get a GM assembly manual. They are reproduced and go for about $50.00 I think. They show EVERY SINGLE step of disassembly of your cars body.

from you post, im assuming is a manual top. the first step i would do is to take some photos and some measurement and buy the assembly manual like what martin suggested.

I removed mine YEARS ago, (MANUAL TOP) so my memory is a little fuzzy. But I do remember that it was simple. The top fabric is attached to a large "U" shaped tack strip that bolts in below the rear window. You need to remove that. The rain gutter is also in there - I don't remember, but I think I removed that as well. The top frame itself is bolted to the car at the sides, behind the rear armrest panels. I remember at least two, maybe three bolts per side. Look for bolts that remove the top frame from the car, not for bolts that disassemble the top frame. The whole top frame comes out as a unit. If you don't need to take it apart any further than that, don't. I like the idea of digital photos as you go - a good reference for reassembly.
