: Another priming question...
Gambitt Sep 29th, 00, 02:43 AM After doing some reading on the paint boards you guys sent me links to, I still have a question or two. Most people agree that it is better to use an epoxy paint on bare metal, and save the k200 for various body work. What is the most common epoxy primer used by most people? Thanks.
ragtopman Sep 29th, 00, 05:00 AM You use a zinc etch on bare metal, not paint. K200 is good primer, its just that it sands really hard(not enough talc, or the other way around)DuPonts 1120S(UroPrime)is good and sands fairly easy. This is what I like to use.
Im sure Austin(if he's around)could clue you in on PPGs more current products.

Gambitt Sep 29th, 00, 07:29 AM I meant to say "epoxy primer"...but I'm not sure thats right either. Is the PPG k200 a zinc etch primer? Thanks for the info, I will look into what you recommended.
ragtopman Sep 30th, 00, 04:17 AM No, K200 is surfacer. Its used to fill plastic and ultra minor surface imperfections. If your into PPG products, go visit your local favorite paint store and ask them for some 'P' sheets. And tell them that your interested in a zinc etch primer(I dont know the # to it)and ask them if anything else has been developed that is better than K200.

Austin Sep 30th, 00, 11:28 AM Sorry I haven't been able to check this for a couple days, busy at work. PPG's best metal etch is DX1791/DX1792 mixed 1 to 1. As far as a epoxy the old standard DP line no longer exists, it has been replaced with DP-LF and I highly recomend useing the 1791/2 metal etch instead of the DP-LF. The old one was discontinued due to current VOC laws. The metal etch should be used on BARE metal ONLY. After appling metal etch I personally prefere D822 corrosion resistant primer (it is a high solids primer that sands faily easy). Save up though quality products (all brands) come with a price. Good luck

Gambitt Oct 2nd, 00, 04:57 PM Thanks guys, you have really helped me out. I am new to this painting and bodywork thing, but I hope to get up to speed and be able to do some of this type thing. It really is nice to hear from pros. Thanks again.

Gambitt Oct 3rd, 00, 07:45 AM Ok, one more stupid question, then I am done for today http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif I am going to sandblast the underside of my 69. Once I get this done I will prime it with a zinc etch primer, then do I need to go on top of that with another primer, or can I directly spray a compatible chasis black paint? Thanks again!
Austin Oct 3rd, 00, 06:33 PM Metal etch, one coat of sealer, then follow up with your chasis paint. I will add though if you use the PPG metal etch don't allow the sealer to completely dry (let it flash off only) before applying the topcoat (chasis paint). If the sealer sits to long, and skims over, the sealer could lift due to the acids in the metal etch.
If your going to do a really nice (show type) job then metal etch follow up with a good primer surfacer, let dry then finish sand the primer, seal, and paint. Hope this helps alittle.
