David,
My gear listings show that the 1967 Camaro had two power steering gears. One listed for V8s the other I assume was for the 6 cylinder. Both gears were quite low effort and had a ratio of 17.5:1

The V8 gear had a total travel (pitman arm sweep) of 87 degrees.

The 6 cylinder gear had a total travel of 70 degrees.

Then in 1968 there was only one power steering gear. Same light effort and same 17.5:1 ratio. But the travel was greatly reduced to 62 degrees.

In 1969 there was again only one power steering gear. It was a variable ratio, 16:1 on center and 12.4:1 near full lock. Still light effort. Travel was increased slightly to 64 degrees 30 min.

Any ideas as to why the travel bounced around so much those first three years? I wonder if tires got wider between 1967 and 1968.

Jim,
Thanks for the info.
I have a tech bulletin from GM that shows a change in the manual boxes between 67 and 68 but not for PS systems. Apparently there were a lot of 67 boxes left over and used on early 68's.

There were two lengths of pitman arms, a long and a short, and three lengths of outer steering arms bolted to the knuckle assy. All of these parts were used in all three years as far as I've been able to tell, and on PS and manual systems.

It might be, that the longest outer arms were not used after 1967, that would leave the medium and short arms used in 68/9. My 67 came with the longest arms, it was originally a Manual equipped car but the PS was dealer installed, most likely the dealer didn't change the outer arms, and my steering was slower than any PS equipped Camaro I have seen, - close to 4 turns lock to lock.

My 67 Sales Broccure says std PS ratio was 17.5 to 1, there was an optional fast ratio at 15.6 to 1.
Manual systems were 28:1, 24:1, 21.6. But I have a 67 SS350 that has manual steering that is much quicker than that, It's around 2.25 turns lock to lock! It must be close to a 12.7 manual system!
