: Can you tell the difference?
tgifford5 Mar 9th, 06, 12:15 PM :clonk: By the VIN can you tell the difference between a RS model and a sport coupe? Is there any other ways to tell for sure what you might have. I have no build sheet so I'm not sure if I have a plain sport coupe and someones attempt to convert to a RS. Or a RS with some parts replaced with standard parts. Are there characteristics common to one and not the other?
Scott Taylor Mar 9th, 06, 12:24 PM What year?
MytMini Mar 9th, 06, 05:06 PM The vin will only tell you the following:
Year
I6 or V8
Coupe or convertible
and - with some deciphering - The nth car of the model year
The trim tag will tell you more, but it varies drastically by year. Give us some more details and you'll get plenty of help.

I have a 69. By the tag on the fire wall I know that it was built in Norwalk, in Oct., V-8, sport coupe, Olympic gold color with black vinyl top. The issue is that it has RS headlight doors but standard inner fender wells. So was the car a RS, in an accident and someone replaced the wrong inner fenders? Or someones attempt to convert over to a RS? Just wondering if there were other features common to one and not the other that would help me figure out what I really have. My car also came with factory air. It also had some components which I took off, that were part of dealer add on for cruise control. Any other body parts that you would find only on one or the other? Brake set up disc/drum. Mono leaf rear springs.
3forme Mar 10th, 06, 09:40 AM The windshield wiper motor is RS specific, you can check that and the plant was in Norwood, Ohio.
Camaroinaz Mar 10th, 06, 11:08 AM You can also check the rear back-up lights to see if the panel looks to be an original. The original should have a stamped look to it, versus a cut. This also assumes that the rear panel has not been replaced at some point. The hole in the firewall for the vacum lines is also specific to the RS model.

You're right I messed up on the city name. Where do I check to verify the wiper motor id numbers?

Where were the vacuum line holes located at on the firewall? Is the rear taillight/backup light wiring harness different?
buzzworth Mar 10th, 06, 12:34 PM headlight switch would be different, too
RUSTY69 Mar 10th, 06, 12:49 PM i think all 69 firewalls had the hole in the firewall for the vacume lines, cause my plane jane had the hole, but had a delete plate bolted over it. and im assuming your 69 has both spoilers?
buzzworth Mar 10th, 06, 01:05 PM and im assuming your 69 has both spoilers?
?? why would you assume that? RS didn't mean D80 or am I missing something?
RUSTY69 Mar 10th, 06, 01:09 PM sorry im semi new to first gens, i thought those were part of the rs package?..
orgsretep Mar 11th, 06, 10:04 AM What is the difference between RS and non RS inner fenders?
click Mar 11th, 06, 10:05 AM RS inner fenders have extra holes punched in them for the bellcrank parts that operate the headlight doors. :)

The end of the wiper motor should be stamped 5045605. Also there should be a headlight squirter solenoid attached to the top of the wiper motor. These are '69 RS only items.
orgsretep Mar 11th, 06, 04:57 PM Thanks Jim. I learned something new!

Do all RS models have headlight washers? I'm assuming that is what the squirter is for.
tgifford5 Mar 13th, 06, 05:54 AM Are the body codes X11 and such specific to RS, SS or Z28?
tgifford5 Mar 13th, 06, 05:57 AM headlight switch would be different, too
What would be different about the headlight switch?
z28doug Mar 13th, 06, 06:44 AM Do all RS models have headlight washers? I'm assuming that is what the squirter is for.
Yes but only on the '69.
z28doug Mar 13th, 06, 06:46 AM What would be different about the headlight switch?
The headlight switch will have vacuum line attachements on a '69 RS.
click Mar 13th, 06, 06:48 AM x11 norwood codes had nothing to do with the RS option, or SS or Z, it was a style trim code.
ChevyThunder Mar 13th, 06, 09:02 AM Look for this rubber grommet with the two vacuum lines that comes through the firewall from the headlight switch to the right of the brake master cylinder

Eric, I think you are refering to the clutch rod boot hole. All 69s had that hole stamped. If the car was an auto, then a plate with 2 screws was added to cover the hole. The RS vacuum line hole was smaller 3/4 or 1" right above the fuse panel hole.
tgifford5 Mar 13th, 06, 12:26 PM I will look to see if I have that hole above the fuse panel. My camaro is an automatic. Does this vacuum line also run over to the heater/ac controls? To run the vents?
