View Full Version : 9.97 @ 135.97...!!!
BigRed-L72 Mar 10th, 06, 05:25 PM Well guy`s the weather wasn`t too bad today!
The temps started to roll on pretty good after 10 AM, wasn`t sure if it was going to happen or not...
The sun was really starting heat things up and I`m sure the temperature was around 80 degrees or so But...
We finally got that elusive 9 sec time slip.!!!
Three passes in a row..9.98/9.99/ 9.97..
Then promptly told .."PARK THE CAR, SPECTATE IF YOU WANT, BUT THE CAR IS DONE FOR THE DAY"..:)
Never felt so good to get the boot..:)

camaroman7d Mar 10th, 06, 06:04 PM Congrats Steve. That had to feel good. Why did they make you park the car? No license? Cage? Just curious.
JimM Mar 10th, 06, 06:09 PM All right, Steve! way to go!
But why did they make you park it? Inquiring minds want to know!
40Coupe Mar 10th, 06, 06:15 PM Congrats!!!
What were the 60 foots and which tires did you use?
BigRed-L72 Mar 10th, 06, 06:34 PM Thanks ...
The car isn`t certified to run 9`s...No diaper, no 10 point cage.. all that .
Sorry the time slip isn`t too legible..here`s the run:
60 FT...1.43 ET
330 ...4.09
1/8 ...6.35 ET @ 108.49 MPH
1000 ...8.31
1/4 ...9.97 ET @ 135.97 MPH
JimM Mar 10th, 06, 06:37 PM well heck, guess it was nice of them to let you back up that first 9 then?
So what's next?
BigRed-L72 Mar 11th, 06, 11:16 AM So what's next?
I`d like to continue to work the car somemore while running the street radials.
To run 9`s in true street fashion wold be nice.
BigRed-L72 Mar 11th, 06, 04:12 PM Congrats!!!
What were the 60 foots and which tires did you use?
Sorry 40Coupe I missed the second question.
Tires were Hoosier Radial slicks. 30/10.5/15`s
ron498 Mar 11th, 06, 04:22 PM Nice job!
I know you guys have been hard at it.
Did the converter freshen make the difference?
Or????
Almost 136 was a big improvement...right?
Ron
BigRed-L72 Mar 11th, 06, 05:13 PM Thanks Ron, We`ve been at it for awhile now and we kept tweeking all along.
The trans and convertor being freshened up did bring the RPMs down about 400 RPM so I think that helped the HYD roller stay in its zone better.
The nearly 136 MPH passes were definitly an improvement!
This might sound crazy but...I honestly now believe that the car can run a 9.89 ET..IF all the conditions are right...
I`m starting to actually be amazed at just how strong the thing really is (within its own limitations of course IE.. Hyd roller..3.73 gears..pump gas and still weighing 3700+ Lbs w/driver)
And thanks for the support Ron...the board must be a little slow these days...
lowcamaro Mar 11th, 06, 11:45 PM great job, are you running a power adder of any sort?
BigRed-L72 Mar 12th, 06, 06:35 AM No power adders..no race gas either
Drag Fabricator Mar 12th, 06, 09:05 AM Red,
I did some calculations on what it would cost in Weight to add the full cage, which at this point with that car is an excellent idea to put in a full cage.
My estimations in Mild steel 1-5/8" x .134 wall would be: 31lbs +/- for the roof halo and front bars
a Dash bar isnt "required" if you have an unmodifed firewall, but for the safety aspect of it, its a good bar to add.
The NHRA minimum spec on a Dash Bar in Mild steel is: 1-1/4 x .118
it would weight roughly 6.5lbs
If you also decide to go with the forward bars extending to the front of the subframe in 1-5/8" x .134 then you'd add roughly 21lbs
If you have a Mild steel 1-3/4" roll bar now, it would be worth it in my opinion to cut it out of the car and put in a Chrome Moly 1-5/8" cage taking advantage of the rules that allow smaller diameter tubes in certain areas, like the dash bar, the cross bar, the SFC struts, and various other bars.
BigRed-L72 Mar 12th, 06, 01:52 PM Thanks for the suggestions Brian.
I know we won`t cut the roll bar we`re using out, but we will add the front bar as required, possibly a dash bar and I think the front stringers should go in as well.
Hey..did you miss the title !!??
DOUG G Mar 12th, 06, 01:59 PM 9's WOW  congrats :beers:

What do you guys do to get that mph up there, I mean theres some more power you found somewhere.... where was it? Glad to finally see you guys make 9s:D
68rs406 Mar 13th, 06, 05:13 PM Excellent job! nice times for sure for pump gas & NA, and based on how you guys snuck up on it, I'll bet there is more left in good conditions.
Also as I'm sure you probably know, theres a bunch more than just a cage at the 9.99 level, you have to step up sfi cert on basically everything, with some additional safety clothing items. And the big one is you need a NHRA comp. certified driver, but oh well, its all part of the fun
All this talk about racing is making me nuts, the tracks have opened recently here, but the weather will have none of it. We have a new car to get dialed in this year (starting over, oh boy....), hopefully we can get out a few times, looking for 6's this year! But we cheat, 2600# car, race gas and, oh yeah, LOTS of nitrous :D .
Good luck the rest of the season, and when it goes faster, Im sure it will.

Part of the improved MPH was due to the radial tire.
But I also jetted the carb down a bit.
I put the timing to 38 degrees and we put a new set of plugs in. Changed the brand of gas too. So collectively it all came together.
Thanks Raphael
68rs406..Thank you , I agree I think there`s more in there BUT the weather is going to be real hot real soon, so I think the good air is over for us. It was warm when we made those passes.
You`re right, there`s a whole list of things to do to be legal. But it`s all for safety reasons so thats ok.
2600 LB car ? what is it??
BDS 502 Mar 13th, 06, 07:24 PM Congratulations on the 9 sec. pass!!!
Where do you race at? That flamed car in the video looks familiar.
68rs406 Mar 13th, 06, 10:42 PM Well, the 2600# car is actually a truck, its a 25:1 certified full chassis El camino. one of those "street legal" pro street cars :D .
Not sure if you have followed any of my posts regarding the other car, but what we were racing was a 3400# 70 nova, basically all steel exc. for the trunk and hood, factory interior, actually an ex pro street/show car turned racer. We ran heavy street and outlaw 10.5 in vegas, and pro street and heavy street locally. With the most recent motor, we went 7.73 @ 176, at 3400#, we had the cars chassis nailed down, so it was running like a bracket car. This was with a small nitrous tune up, 2 stages of foggers totalling about 450-500 horse. Motor is an all aluminum 632, w/ old olds DRCE heads, sheet metal intake and dual dominators. we really never leaned on it with the nitrous, and it was real reliable.
Problem is, at 180 or 7.50, the cars chassis was illegal, and as much as we all loved the car, money prohibited re doing the chassis, and it was real porky at easily 3400# race weight, for a 7 second car. To compete it needed advanced ET cert, or 25:1. so sadly it was sold over winter, less motor and trans.
So, the motor and trans is now in the El, with a full chassis ( a beautiful one btw), that will, or should allow us to be in the hunt for a shot at the 6's. We would like to try and compete in the 10.5 tire class with it, we'll see how it hooks.
I'll try and find a photo of the El, but you portland guys will know it as bad bob's old car.
Heres the vid. of the Nova's 7.73 pass Nova 7.73@176 (http://www.npsaracing.com/Videos/Trevor.wmv)
ron498 Mar 13th, 06, 11:30 PM As soon as I read....Pro Street El Camino....I'm thinking...gotta be Bad Bob's car.
For those who don't know....quite a ride.
Sure to be better now!
Hope to see you at Woodburn this summer.....PIR will never hold that much of a car.
Always loved that car...Bad Bob...and it was BAD.
As Huey Lewis said.....sometimes....bad is bad!
Ron
BlackoutSteve Mar 14th, 06, 12:01 AM BigRed.. I'm impressed..
What size engine have you got to run that mph with that much weight, with no power adders and pump gas??
I'm busting my hump with 454 cubes, 12:1, 4.11s, the same weight and only running low 120s.
Please tell me you have a 632.. It sure would help me feel better! ;)
67RS502 Mar 14th, 06, 06:27 AM Its a 534 at 3700lbs :D
Just think what it would run if it was 3300lbs like my car, it could go mid 9s
ron498 Mar 14th, 06, 10:10 AM Or, if it were in my Nova, it could spin to mid tens!
Interesting about the drop in rpm with the freshened trans and converter. If it dropped 400 rpm...a good thing, and picked up 3mph......the net difference was more like 6-700 rpm.
But, you went to a 30" tire.
All in all, very nice results. I wouldn't change a thing. Add the extra roll bar and it might slow right back to where you don't need certification etc. That plus the heat of the summer.
Again, great job!
Ron
zdld17 Mar 14th, 06, 03:37 PM At the first message I presume you pulled front wheels and started clock with back tires,, until I saw your weight. Good run.

Yes, its really a nice piece of work, bob spared no expense on that car, the chassis is a thing of beauty.
My buddys bro in law bought it in its entirety from bob, he just called it quits with the race cars i guess. Stole it too, 707 and all, heck, the car went 7.80's NA with that motor. Unfortunately, he really had no idea what he was getting into (first serious drag car), and never got the car dialed in or down the track consistently. We helped him a couple times When we were not racing, but you know how it is, you have got to know your own car. He sold his winston west car to buy it, roundy rounds were too much $.(drag racing is better? ;) )
Well, this winter he bought a real nice 25:1 vette (not sure why, he still hadn't figured out the EL), and put the motor and trans from bob's car in it, and sold my buddy the El camino as a roller, pretty much everything but motor/trans. His old motor/trans from the nova is in it now.
It should fly, figure the El is about 800#'s lighter, twice the chassis, and the nova ran 7.70's with ease. Hope we can get it to hook, but the chassis is georgeous and it should be good to go. Hell, the nova was an old school ladder bar car, and we got it to hook. pacific raceways, aka SIR, has really improved too, it should provide some hook.
The EL should be real nice, he wants to put emblems back on and make it a bit more factory looking, but it really is nice to begin with. Would love to make it out to wodburn this year, but it probably is going to be a transition year with the new program, plus my buddy is building a new house so he's real busy, we'll see though, hopefully later in the summer.
Thanks for the kind words Ron, and sorry for the "semi hijack" Bigred
BigRed-L72 Mar 14th, 06, 05:24 PM BDS 502..We run at Moroso Motor Sports Park out west of Palm Beach Gardens.
68rs406...
OK, you guys are way, way out there in a whole different world.. 6`s ??? at first I thought you were talking 1/8 mile !!!
UNREAL!
67RS502...Now that`s a compliment!
Blackout...120`s doesn`t sound too bad to me, shows you`ve got some power there. I like the 632 part..had to laugh on that one
ron498...The trans and the convertor both had issues and when fixed, it helped get the RPMs down some. Spin to mid 10`s..thats funny.
zdld17...That would really be impressive.
Thanks Guy`s...Jim always asks me how the boards are responding to this latest post... He enjoys hearing your comments
lowcamaro Mar 14th, 06, 10:35 PM what rear end setup are you running, hope to see you at Pacific this year
68rs406 Mar 15th, 06, 04:44 PM what rear end setup are you running, hope to see you at Pacific this year
Me?
Well, the nova was running a ladder bar setup, and now the El has a four link.
My own personal car (the camaro) is all stock stuff with a set of caltracs and drag radials, its just a street car that I race when I'm not working on my buddys car, ran 11.70 @ 115, should be around 11.50 this year, I made a couple of changes. I'm planning on racing it more since we won't be running the race car as much this year, but we'll see.
Hope to see you out there
