My birthday also happened to be fathers day, and my wife, who works for GM, bought me a new GM grill for my '68Z. It's grey plastic. I suspect it should be black. Which black, and should I scuff the plastic first?
Thanks

I don't know about the '68s, but in '69, Zs had gray grills. Black was for Super Sports, and even some colors of SS had gray grills as well. Back in high school (1976) a girl "friend" of mine had an all original, daily driver '69 Z. Gray grill...No cowl hood.
I'd check with the Camaro Research Group about your '68. They pay particular attention to the "correctness" of nit-pickin' little details like that. Sounds like a fun car!

I did research on the grey grille or black when my new one arrived in grey and from information I found although Ican't remember exactly where only a handful of very early 68's had black grilles - most were grey.
I guess most ended up painted black during the early seventies when it was fashionable to splash black paint anywhere.

My 68Z grill is grey. I'm replacing it now and will paint it black.

I just received an original GM grille for my 68 coupe and it is grey as well. I figured it would need to be painted but now you all have got me wondering. I also got original GM upper and lower grille moldings and they are aluminum and black. Does a grey grille really go with all this black trim? I'm not conviced this will look that good. Guess I'll have to do some research when the time comes to replace the broken black reproduction grille in there now.

The Grey NOS ones for 69's is very rare. I lucked onto one with a small crack in the area that will be painted body color. Traded my black GM and $100 for the grey one. Now you can get aftermarket grey for $140. Anyone know how good they are?
