Well i finally did it. I am extremely happy with the results. I had few runs, but they sanded out pretty easily. Thanks to everyone for all the help.

Looks good! What paint line did you use? I’ll be painting in my garage too, so I’m curious how your “booth” worked. I see you had filters taped to the wall. Not sure if that was front or back. Did you have a fan pulling or pushing air, and what kind of fan did you use?

I used PPG's paint system. I actually mixed their omni products with the ppg products. i used all the omni primers and the omni color. The color is Galaxy silver which the 2002 pontiac silver. The Clear Coat is PPG 2002 clear. I am really happy with their products.
I risked it with the fans. Despite what everyone told me I used the cheap box fans for my garage booth. I extended my garage about 4 ft with some 2x4 walls. On each side of the extension I had one fan blowing air through a filter into the garage and then I had one fan used as the exhaust. I kept a filter in front of the fan and changed the filter about every hour.
Anyway, I am glad I am done...

WOW... ::APPLAUSE::

It DOES look good! I'm trying to convince my wife that we should paint the Camaro some shade of silver instead of a deep, dark purple and I've been showing her pictures. http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif Thanks!
Great idea about the filter IN FRONT of the fan. I was afraid to set fans up also but now I'll use the filter method.

Looks good. I really like that color on your car.

AND you did it yourself. THAT just plain rocks. I wish I would have had the nuts to paint mine, but I just broke down and had someone else do it.

Again congrats, thats really an acomplishment for a do it yourselfer.

Thanks for all the replies about the car. I will make sure I post some more pics when I have the whole car back together. I just got done putting in the headliner tonight. Another one of those dreaded things people hate doing. I am glad I had the windows out to do this. It would have been a pain with them in. Anyway thanks

Good lookin ride . How about posting some info on how you fit them huge tires in the back.

duke's68
Nov 4th, 02, 05:32 PM
The tires were easy. I put kdw's 275/40/17 on a 17x9 wheel with a 5" backspacing. They don't appear to rub anywhere and required no modifications to the car. I had previously rolled the inner fender. the front are 17x8's with 235/45/17 and a 4.5" backspacing.

What are those blue squares in the back ground?

They are furnace/AC filters. I put them there to help let the garage breath a little. I also used them in front of the intake and exhaust fans. They help keep the dust out of the paint.

About how much $$$ did you save doing it yourself?

looks good by the way

I'm not exactly sure. Probably $8-10,000. I replaced both quarter panels, repaired/replaced %75 of the window channel front and rear, rear trunk floor, tail pan, panel between trunk and rear window, built custom dash, filled firewall, installed detroit speed subframe connectors. Replaced the lower front part of both doors. Well maybe it would be more than $10,000. I did go talk to a local restoration shop that wanted $3000 to final block sand it and paint the car. That's if I did all the body filler and painted the door jambs, trunk, under hood, etc....
I am just glad it turned out.....I'll post some new pictures this weekend. The pictures I posted was when it very overcast so the real color is hard to see. It's going to be sunny for the first weekend in a month. Can't wait....

Nice Job! and great way to save money. I don't want to come across sounding like your mother here. I think painting your own car is a fantastic Idea. But this stuff is very toxic! a dust mask won't protect you from the vapors (yes, painting one car can kill you) Secondly, painting a car in an enclosed plastic tent with regular fans (not intrinsically safe (no sparks)) Is a death wish. Drop your trouble light or get the right range of vapor and air into the fan and you won't live long enough to know what went wrong. Please don't take this as a lecture. I've been a firefighter for 25 years and have personally witnessed the results of something like this gone wrong. Paint your car, but do it safe.
Regards
Jim

Gmjim, you make an excellent point. I was aware of everything you talked about. I look around town and could not find a shop that would rent out their booth. I would have prefered a real booth to what I used. I even called every paint rental company to look for a fresh air breathing system. I came up dry on all these things.
So I decided to build a booth and risk it. I added as many filters in the booth to allow it to breath as good as it could.

To everyone on Camaros.net, please do not take what I did as proof that you will be ok. There is a large risk to painting without the proper facilities and I was just young/stupid enough to take that risk.

Just a thought... would the plastic be as neccessary if using an HVLP gun?
Or is the plastic's primary purpose to keep dust OUT?

(trying to think of a way to dilute the toxious fumes)

Glad to see you were thinking! Sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do! I've done it too!
Too bad about renting a booth. You would think there would be a small shop out there that would'nt mind making a few bucks while their booth was empty.

I think a HVLP would significantly reduce the amount of fumes. The plastic is to protect the garage and to keep the dust out. I painted some fenders from another car without sealing the garage door and I got dust specs everywhere.
