I'm planning on putting new ralley wheels and tires on my 68 Camaro and need advise as to what combo will fit without any clearance problems. Right now I have drum brakes up front but plan on changing to disc in the near future. The tires that I plan on putting on are P215/70R15. What size wheel would be best for the front end with or without disc brakes? I can get a 15X6 ralley with 3.5" backspace or a 15X7 with 4". Right now I have 225/60R15s on 15X7 up front with no problems but I worry about what will work with disc brakes later as far as turning clearances.

I would recommend 15x7's with the 4" BS with that size tire. What are you planning on running for the rear?

I was planning on running the same tire all the way around. I notice that in most posts, everyone runs a bigger tire on the rear but right now I am running 255/60R15 on the rear and 215/65R15 on the front and I have a slight rake with the rear being slghtly higher than the front by about 2". I thought with all 4 tires being the same height, I would have a more level car. I also found that the wheels that I plan on buying has a 4" or 4.25 backspace. Would I be better off getting the 4.25" backspace? I'm also thinking about going to 215/65R15 for all four wheels since That's what is on my front and I know that I don't have any clearance problems with these that are on now.

You'll definately be safe running 215/65-15 front/rear. You'd save some money going that route with only having to buy the rears and you'll also have tire rotation capability. Another option would be to keep the fronts and run 235/60-15 on the back. That should give you a level ride height with a little bit wider look in the back. I personally like a wider rear tire.
A few questions: What's the BS of your current rims? Do you have any rubbing issues with the 255's out back? Is your car at stock ride height or has it been lowered?

I have no personal experience running 15's but have been researching this quite a bit, as I too want to run 15's on my 68 w/ front disc's. From what I have gleaned, general consensus is that for the fronts 15 x 7 w/ 4" BS is optimal, 4.25" BS should work, 3.5" is not enough for a 7 inch rim. Out back - 15x8 are the norm with 4.5" BS, 4.25" & 4" may work depending on tire width. A 7" rim out back gives you a little more clearance, but can't go with quite as wide a tire. Some have claimed to run a 275 for rear's, but 255 seems to be the norm. and with 4" BS on the fronts, you should be able to do a 225 tire.

Hope this helps,

Jon

Lucky68, The BS on my current rims are 4.25" all around. The rear sits up a little so I don't have any rubbing problems. The rear shocks & tail pipes , the closest things to the tires, are about 1.5"-2" from them. Other then the rear sitting a little high, the suspension is all stock. You can see a picture of my car by going to the showroom feature at the top of the page and go to shows and cruises. Mine is the red 68SS with black vinyl top.(about the tenth picture from the start.
JD4020, Great information. I'm running 215/65R15s on the front now with 4.25"BS and I know that works so I'll probably go with that. I was going to go with the 70R series but I rarely see anyone on this site even asking about using that size tire. With tires and rims you don't have the luxury of being able to take them back to the dealer if the combo doesn't work out.
