bought a new crate motor with high volume oil pump and running the oil pressure is fine between 50 and 60 lbs but at an idle sometimes drops to 10 to 12 lbs but usually stays around 20. i have checked the line for kinks but there are none do you think the guauge could just be off at times, or do i need to be worried? also with a new aluminum radiator and 1500 cfm fan and shround in stop and go traffic the temp can get around 220. 225 is the highest and thats with a 195 stat i tried a 180 and it just stayed open the whole time what to do, what to do.

Your 1500CFM fan is not enough to cool your engine. You need to step up on the fan and run a shround. Your engine/oil temps directly effect your oil pressure. 220-225* is on the HOT side, I would flip out if my car ever got that hot.

what should it run around 200-210 is what ive always heard. i just orderd dual fans 3600 cfm flexalite i keep hearing it is going to run warmer because its a 383 stroker with aluminum heads and 11.1 comp what does your engine run? temp and oil pressure

I respomded to your PM. I just re-read this post when you are talking 200-210 are you talking oil or water temps? If it is water temps that is on the high side. No, your 383 with aluminim heads should not run any hotter than a 350, if you have your cooling system up to snuff. I bet the larger fan will do the job.

Oil pressure should run 15 pounds plus 10 pounds for each 1000 RPM. So at idle you should have about 20-25 pounds pressure; 2000 RPM should read 30 pounds, 3000 RPM should read 40, 4000 RPM should read 50, etc. up 'til you hit the bypass spring pressure in the pump (usually 65 psi).

As far as the fan goes it's a perfect size, you just need two of them because you are not getting enough CFM air flow through the radiator to cool the engine. That is why the temp rises when you stop and goes down when you go.

10lbs per 1000 RPM is the general rule of thumb. This is the first time I have ever heard fo the additional 15 psi. at idle. I know there are many cars that would fail that test.

Including mine. I run 15-20 at idle and am not the slightest bit concerned about it.

Yeah man im with Royce here...if my motor runs over 180 i kind of freak out.... somthing is wrong, over 200 and it gets shut off..I usually run around 165-170 even in the dead ass Iowa humidity/heat. Last year at Car Craft the actual temp was at over 100 degrees i was in bumper to bumper traffic with my motor running like hell it was only at 180...

My camaro has always run around 200-210,never had a problem with it...hey secgenmaro81 I did notice you were from Savannah,Ga. how much difference do you see in temp from summer to winter.I know in Nashville in July and August with 100+ degees and 100% humidity you can run the coolant through a refrigerator and not get the temp below 200...And I've been in savannah in july and its as bad or worse

The best fan on the market is the Vintage Air 18" fan, it is the same as the Lincoln Mark VIII fan. They are just about the perfect size for your Camaro. They move between 4500-5000CFM. I ran one on my blown Camaro with no shroud and even on 100*+ days it never got over 200*. I could sit in stop and go traffic all day and it would not overheat. I wish you would have posted before buying the new fan set-up you can get the Mark VIII fans with shroud for under $100

yeah i wish i would have posted too. my buddy has a built 302 in his 95 mustang, he runs those fans and says they do good but what does he know he still owns a mustang. saturday was the first night i really got to play around with it and it held its own against his car and he runs mid 11's on motor, he was a little upset, especially knowing im still running 3.08 gears im waiting for the 410s to come in now, should be here thursday, that should really hurt his feelings.

If I might chime in here, I'm running two 12" SPAL fans (roughly 2720cfm) on a Ron Davis radiator plus a B&M cooler. Engine is a 8-71 blown 509ci Merlin bb, dual Holley's, etc... Temp at idle in winter is around 175, driving on interstate (3100rpms w/ 4.11 gears) for 20 mintues or so in spring and summer around 193 to 200, getting off interstate into traffic around 210 max. Non-interstate crusing around 193-200. Oil pressure varis between 20 and 60.
