View Full Version : 327 60cc heads 4 speed 3:31 cam selection?
30lbtest Mar 14th, 06, 12:16 AM Well I have been up for 30 hours reading about cams dynamic compression ratios and valve timing. Bottom line is I want good low-end torque for street driving. have headers, edel performer intake, msd 6al, 3:31 gears.
Heads I am getting will flow about 190. SO I read 200 posts and sites about dcr and scr. the motor is no deck work flat top with no bore. 4.0001 x 3.25 with .025 deck. It seems I am using a .040 gasket felpro 1003? all things considered what cam? the comp cam l79 has a 66 intake close which gets this 10.03:1 set up down to 7.9 dcr. is this too low?
can I go with a 268 lunati 60 intake close and a dcr of 8.27. will I be ok on pump gas 93 octane at 8.27? I would like to keep the engine at 180, 170 lowest. I got the 60cc heads as a deal, would like to use them....and wrap a low torque engine set up around them. optimum rpm range is under5800 on the street.
So in short what cam on this 327?
onovakind67 Mar 14th, 06, 03:04 AM How did you arrive at your compression figure? I get about 9.3:1 compression using -7cc at the volume of the piston reliefs.
pdq67 Mar 14th, 06, 06:22 AM Install Fel-Pro's #1094 .015" thick shim headgaskets and you should be up to 9.89 to 1 CR IF the -7 cc valve notch number is correct??
Any one of these cams will do you nicely, imho.
CC 268HE, 270 Magnum, and 270S solid;
Isky 270 Mega and Z-20 solid;
Crane 272/272 Energizer and 274H06; and
The small Crower solid too... ---- Old stock, Duntov, -097 solid TOO!!!!!!
I am not a fan of XE type cams b/c of noise and accel. valvetrain wear, BUT I am ALSO old-school... I know there are more modern and aggressive cams out there that will make "some" more power so I will leave it up to you.
AND notice the 268 to 274 duration range here for this CR......

30lbtest Mar 14th, 06, 11:16 AM thanks PDQ67.. seems i left off the 7cc in the head, which had me up too high for scr. I read alteast 100 postings from PDQ67and this one finally did it. I am out to get the thin felpros and will come to grips with my 268-274 cam.
from what i gathered the lunati 60103 was not ranked high to noise and wear.
I am zeroed in now on my cam list, and will let you know how this thing makes out.
The other posts seem to have this motor in the 320-330hp at the crank, right? with a standard 268 cam?
pdq67 Mar 14th, 06, 06:03 PM Imho, should be and MAYBE some higher??
It will be a DANDY street motor....

PS., fwiw, I ran your set-up through the ROSS Racing Pistons CR. calculator..
shooterpcb Mar 17th, 06, 08:25 PM I had a great 327 in my 66 Chevelle and had a similar setup. 1970 186 cast 62cc iron heads and a 3.42 rear end. I used the Summit cam with dual pattern part# SUM K1105 on the street and it did VERY well with idle and power up to 5700rpm with a power glide auto. Duration= intake.224/234, Lift=.465/488. The Summit SUM K1107 is OK too but more of a choppy idle and rated for 3000-6500rpm. The .268 duration is gonna be more than you might be wanting on the street for normal driving and the occasional stomp of the throttle pedal. That .268 duration cam will not begin any potential until 2700rpmand will likely have a .510+ lift. It will NOT be a good street idle to 5800rpm cam like you want. A .268dur. cam is for racing or high stall auto trans convertors and low gears(4.10-5.13 gears). Having dual patterns in the cam like I recommended means that the flow is adjusted for the intake runner and exhaust being of different flow volumes and valve sizes. I am a big fan of dual pattern cams after using this cam. I will not hesitate to buy another one for a future small block. The whole kit with hydraulic cam,lifters and lube was less than $75.00. I was told about this cam from a friend who ran it in his 71 Camaro with a 4 speed and a 350. We both used 650cfm carbs and headers. He ran 12s in the quarter mile with it with 3.73 gears and a 4 speed consistently. Hope this helps some.
Just my $.02 of input.
JimM Mar 17th, 06, 08:53 PM Niel, those cams they talking are around 270 advertised duration. The .050" numbers are right around 224-232 or so. They are all excellent street cams with great low and midrange torque.
30lbtest Mar 17th, 06, 10:39 PM I appreciate the support. So the note above states the 268 lunati is too big a cam for a good street ride with some impressive put of the hole torque. I am not really interested in having a 2800-5000 slingshot, Really just looking for the 1200-5000 muscle car pull. with some added non stock qualities about it. lets say 2-3 times per year I may run it in the qtr to see what it will do.
the l79? I am all over the place now....
oger Mar 18th, 06, 08:13 AM Which 4spd? The use of an M-21, 22 will really limit your cam selection.
pdq67 Mar 18th, 06, 08:58 AM Install a CC 268HE or a Crane 272/272 Energizer AND you will be VERY HAPPY, imho!!
The .040" over 300hp/327 motor I gave my nephew had the 272/272 Energizer in it. Sucker ran like a "scalded-dog"!!!!
And when I rebuilt it for him, I went right back in with a New Old Stock General/Kinetics equivalent one b/c I liked it that much!

30lbtest Mar 18th, 06, 09:51 AM It finally clicked, and lets call this post a dead one. Less than .475 lift and adv. duration between 268/276....
DONE got it. will post when it is done.
