I removed the old trashed spoiler from my 68 and would like to fill the holes on the trunk lid. I will be sanding and priming soon...What is the best way to deal with the holes? I have no experience in body work, btw....

Thanks,

Paul

Hi Paul,

I'd say the BEST way would be to weld them shut. Do you know anyone that's pretty good with a MIG welder? It's pretty easy if you know what you're doing and only takes a few minutes.

Good luck with whatever method you choose.

Of course the easiest way to fill the holes is with a NEW spoiler! :D

Actually, a new spoiler came with the car. But now that I have it off I kinda like the look. I'm sure the guy that's going to do my floor pans could probably do it. I'm also thinking about filling all of the emblem holes too....I've seen some cars done that way and it looks pretty sharp. Opinions?

Hi Paul H. I agree with Hwystarjoe!! I'd mig weld then closed and that would just be like doing a plug weld on them!! And that would be a permanment solution for the better!!!Shouldn't really be much of a charge to do that either!! But me personally I'd stick with the spoiler, but it's all a matter of opinion and it is YOUR car!!!! Good Luck!!! graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Shaving the emblems and spoilers? Might look cool with the right color paint job and suspension stance. I like when a cars been shaved tastefully, but it's gotta be lowered also, with the pro-touring look. Bigger wheels, etc. If you're gonna be using the wheelwell molding, drip rail molding, etc. it might look goofy with no emblems.
Spoilers are a personal preference.... I can take them or leave them. But if you're going to delete emblems and stuff, have the holes welded shut. You won't ever have to worry about them cracking or showing thru in the future. I'd have the fenders, header, trunk lid etc. off of the car so the backsides of the welds can be properly dressed afterwards.
But in the future if you (or the future owner) want to reattach things to the body, you'll need the proper templates to redrill the holes in the correct spots. Something to think about.

Good luck!

if you do weld them shut, what you can do to make it easier is to put an unused rivet throught the back side. slide the rod part through the back side of the hole and use it as a holder. make sure the shoulder part of the rivet doesnt go through the hole.

i cant remember where i got that tip fro but it works.

...or just flatten out a piece of copper pipe and go to town cause the weldment wont stick to the copper. graemlins/waving.gif
