I have a 91 camaro RS 3.1 V6 with a 5 speed manual. I just went through the process of replacing my clutch, pressure plate, and throwout bearing. After reassembling I tested it and my clutch will not disengage. I then took everything apart and confirmed that I had the throwout bearing installed correctly, and that the clutch master and slave cylinder are working. After assembling I then tried it again with the same results. I am stumped as to why the clutch will not disengage. Has anyone else had this problem? Please help.

Is it a hydraulic clutch? If it is did you bleed it after installing it?

Check your pedal free play to make sure it is adjusted correctly. You can adjust the free play by turning in the push rod.

Isn't a '91 nonadjustable hydraulic? Sounds like it needs to be bled.

Correct......1984 and newer have a hydraulic clutch. Also there is no linkage adjustment on the 5 speed manuals. I double checked the manual for the information on 5 speeds.

Sometimes you can just pump the hell out of it and get them working again. The system needs bled. I have seen where you need to replace the slave after doing a clutch R&R but try pumping it -a lot! It may take a few minutes but it usually works.

Also your clutch disc could be in backwords?

Teach me something, guys. If one unbolts, not un-hose it, the slave cylinder and places it out of the way, its still under the m/c and gravity prevails, how is it going to need bleeding?
It never moved, doesn't leak, may have been pushed back due to the new disc thickness, and, if I remember, GM recommends if one item needs replacing, you back the hydraulic asssembly complete, ie, m/c, hose, and slave cyl. Or am I mistaken?
So the hydraulic system needs to be bled, nothing moved, as in the slave cylinder being unbolted and stored above the m/c, gravity prevails.
The disc being installed backwards is a possibilty, but the bolts wouldn't be quite long enough to reach and clamp.

My pressure plate's diaphram spring fingers were just heat wrapped enough that you couldn't really tell unless you looked real close from the right angle in the right light! I thought the sucker was fine, but it wasn't!!
AND Travis pointed it out to me!!!!
Sucker wouldn't dis-engage to shift!!
Therefore, maybe you need a new pressure plate.

Problem found. The replacement clutch plate is just slightly different then the original. The clutch plate side that goes to the flywheel of the original is flush, while the new one slightly sticks out. When I returned it to the parts store they double checked everything, and we found that whoever packaged the clutch kit included the wrong clutch plate. They replaced the kit with the right parts and now everything is working correcly.
