I got a problem that I could sure use some help with. My 67 wants to overheat. Its got a 350 TPI engine out of a 87 IROC Z. Cooling system is basically all new. I just finshed resetting the timing to 8*btdc. Then I accelerated the engine(after reconnection timing advance control) but I'm only getting about 19* at aprox.3200 rpm.I havent driven the car since resetting timing,so I dont know if the cooling problem is better or not. But right now I'm concerned about the timing not advancing beyound 19*. I'm under the impression that it should advance to around 36*.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

can you give us a little more info???are you using the stock chip??i thought those motors are supposed to be set at 6* BTDC...did you change anything to make it act the way it is or is this something that just happened(the cooling part)??also i'm not sure you can check the timing that way..you really need to log the timing out on the road with a datalogger..

What ECM do you have?Dont think that the timming is a problem for now. What type of fan do you have?Belt driven or eletric?

Your 19* of timing will be fine for coolant system checkout. Somewhere, you reconnect the ignition back up and interupt battery power for a couple minutes, and continue on.
There may be another reason why it doesn't advance more. Could be a misplaced sensor wire, wrong program from another car rather than the donor car. The problems I've seen is when one goes bad, there is like max advance, 55* at 1500 rpm.
The ECM used does have to match, or be from the donor car, as well as all the sensors and equipment used in the donor car. Hence, the chip has to match the engine used, trans, and Federal smog system. If you ever go to the dealer to get a chip programmed, take the donor car's VIN with you.

Thanks for the suggestions .. I'm thinking you guys may have the answer.. My son has wired a disconnect switch for the timimg advance so as not to have to disconect plugs for setting timing.. (this engine was his previously) So I've only been flipping a switch when setting timing then returning switch to "on" position for normal operation.Tonight I will try disconnecting the battery for a couple of minutes then reconnect to see if that makes any differance..
Thanks again for the advice..
