Well I finally I got break with weather and it was warm enough to spray the trunk with Zolatone. The previous owner had replaced the trunk but did a poor job coating it with rattle can spatter paint. So I had to spend about 8 hours wire wheeling removing the old spatter paint. Then I applied a coat DP90 primer and the next day shot the Zolatone using a cheap conventional spray, from Harbor Freight p/n 93205, I picked up for $10. It has a 1.8mm tip and I wouldn't recommend going any smaller.

As for the results personally I couldn't be happier with the results. It come out even better that I was hoping. I attached a few pics of the trunk after wire wheeling and finished.

That looks awesome. I did mine with Zolatone too, used a body shutz gun which worked fine but shoots about a pint's worth in, like, 2 seconds. Keep the deck lid up, that stuff takes a couple of weeks to dry.

I have to re-do my trunk paint but the car is together. I was going to do the wire wheel route and then just use some cans of splatter paint. Any different recommendations?

is that zolatone a water based product similar to other trunk spatter paints?

i think i would first paint with a good metal etching primer sealer or even por 15 first......

Looks Great. It's amazing what a little elbow grease can accomplish.

It is water soluble until it dries, then the copmarison to rattle can spatter ends as it becomes rock hard and resists wear from abrasion, scratching, and chipping in normal everyday use and can even be washed with removing the prodcut or having it rust.

As for the base coat I just used what Larry, at Camaros Plus, recommended and has been using for years, a coat of black DP90, but I imagine a metal etching primer sealer or even por 15 would work just as well.

Personally, I don't think a good epoxy primer can be beat. I will be doing the same to my trunk when I get to that point.

I bought mine from Larry at Camaros Plus in Arvada, CO (303-420-6229). You can also pick it up at your local NAPA store, which is cheaper, but Larry sells a blend which matches the correct color used on the 1st gens trunks. I have roughly $106 in the trunk restoration which includes the cost of the zolatone, $66 delivered, and 1/2 quart of DP90 and catalyst, roughly $30 and
$10 for the spray gun. Money well spent as far as I am concerned.

As for the quantity, I used a whole quart, and I sprayed everything I could get at: wheelwells, underside of package tray, tailpan, etc. That included a good second coat on the main area of the trunk

Yes the zolatone is a single stage, but prior to that I prepped the surface for a coat of DP90, let it dry overnight and then applied the zolatone.

Zoloton works awesome through a 2.0 or so tip. My friend is the sales rep for the southeast. The trick to a killer finish is to choke the fluid to break up the specks to get it covered, then crank the fluid wide open and speckle it. We use the grey sandstone a lot here.

I purchased what is suppose to be the GM formula from John Berlage, East Dubuque, IL phone 815-747-2731 for $65.00. Camaro Specialties (Bob) uses them for his restoration and provided intitial contact.

It looks great.

I recently repainted the original trunk in my 69 project car. The car had a trunk mat with serious surface rust underneath (no holes though), plus the weatherstrip was installed with the gap on the wrong side so all the water would seep into the trunk.

The trunk was wire-wheeled, sanded and cleaned thoroughly, and prepped with POR-15. Shot 2 coats of John Berlage's super duper special trunk paint mixture and couldn't be happier with the results:

True, Supercar Workshop has a nice product but you need a perfect condition trunk to start with. The Zolatone and Berlage's paints are thicker and "goopier" and cover up defects a lot more effectively.

Here is the post from Mr Berlage that got me interested in his product:

Hello,

My name is John Berlage. I own a Butternut yellow 69 Yenko, as well as a 69 maroon copo. I faced the same problem everyone else is experiencing when it comes to finding a good trunk paint. A couple of years ago i spent year and a half looking for a good source. I stumbled upon and OEM supplier that produced the paint for GM. During my restoration of my yenko, before sandblasting the trunk, I sprayed some of the new paint over the old. I could not tell a difference. The paint in my opinion is the best you can get. I would like everyone to keep in mind that each GM plant did have variation in texture and look. For anyone who is skeptical please email me at r.berlage@comcast.net for pictures of my yenkos trunk.

I would also like to note, since it has come up on this discussion, how you apply the product is critical to how the paint looks. During my search I also discovered that GM used a very specific gun to spray the paint. They used a binks 2001 gun, with a 200 tip, a 66 fluid nozzle and a internal mix aircap.

Nice trunks everybody!

I always planned on putting the houndstooth mat back in mine (a restoration), as the car originaly came with one.

Does anyone plan on covering their trunks for protection or leave the mat out due to moisture trap etc?

I am only using a mat when I put lawn chairs, or other stuff, in the trunk when going to a cruise/show.

There is a new cross linker for Zolotone I just did some testing with. I was a test mule for it. Makes the stuff into iron. Were using it on bridges around here. We will soon have Zolotone and the cross linker available to the web soon. We also just made a deal with the North American importer for a European line of killer paint products we use for which we will be the web distributor. We are talking super high end German Glasurit, Spies Hecker and Standox quality products for less then half price. We will be putting together "restoration kits" which will include epoxy, Polyester spray filler, Urethane primer and clear coat, to be used with base available at your local jobbers. We have been supplying this locally and now are finishing the license to be able to ship product.

I stripped it with aircraft stripper, wire wheeled the rusty areas, covered it with rust bullet and then sprayed it with 3 cans of black-aqua splatter paint. I then clear coated it. It looks great.

I was/am not concerned about it looking 100% factory--I just want it clean, nice looking and really close to the factory look. I achieved both.

Wanted to give some thanks to this thread. I used the standard black/black Zolatone 20 (#20-06) for my trunk and it turned out awesome....I couldnt be happier with the all black Zolatone. Plus it was about $30 cheaper per quart than the special "original color" mixes. I used a 2.2 tip Devilbiss HVLP gun and it was still a bit of a challenge to spray but It worked out fine. It dried pretty fast and is hard as a rock after only 12 hours dry time.
