I am taking out my 4 speed and installing a TH400 trans. The trans is a long tail shaft th400 and has been built strong for use behind my big block engine. What is it going to take to make the swap complete. I have no problem with console/floor modifications. Will my cross member have to be modified? Thanks!

In my 68 I went with a smallblock 350 with a TH400 and the measurement from centre of trans yoke cup to pinion yoke cup was 46 1/8". That is with the trans yoke bottomed out and pulled back 1". I also went with a 3 1/2" driveshaft and 1350 series ujoints. This is only ballpark your measurement for your application.

Will also need the Turbo 400 trans crossmember and the 400 yoke for the drive shaft. Check Rick's or D&R for these items as they are pretty pricy at your local Chevy dealer.

were there any console/trans driveshaft hump issues for you? I was wondering if the center hump in the floor is different from 4 speed to auto? How much fabrication is necessary to swap over as far as the shifter assembly and floor hump modifications? Thanks.

Here is a site that gives dimensions of various transmissions. You will need a t-400 xmember as stated above, and it's possible you'll have to modify it a bit if using a long tailshaft t400.

Why are you going from a 4 speed to a th400??

Tranny humps are the same, with the exception of the hole cut for the 4-speed shifter. The factory style (and most aftermarket) auto shifters are cable operated, so location isn't an issue really. You'll have to cover the big shifter hole to mount the auto shifter.
