View Full Version : 89 V8 305 TBI Major fuel pump Problems
jonmoore97 Mar 15th, 06, 09:44 AM Hey Guys, I am at my end. Got a new fuel pump at Autozone for 35 bucks. The thing barley started my car before shutting down. I look at the carb to see if any fuel is coming out. Instead of a spray it trickles out. That confused me because the pump did make a good humm.
After that I went and uprgraded to a Carter - same thing. Are they selling me the wrong part or model number. It seems I am not getting enough fuel to the carb to start my camaro. Major headache.. Any ideas like relay or bad filter. That I did change 15,000 miles ago. Dont know and at this point thinking about going to the dealer and getting a delco (Major money) instead of a crappy aftermaket junk..
Thanks Guys...
Camaro Dave Mar 15th, 06, 12:48 PM Is your car Carbureted or FI? If you still have the Throttle body then the injectors might be bad. If you have a carburetor, are you using the correct fuel pump with the carburetor? There is a difference between the two. As for the aftermarket fuel filters, they should work just as good as the A/C Delco filters (Just less expensive).
jonmoore97 Mar 15th, 06, 01:18 PM The car is a two barrel carb. and thats the problem I don't know if the people at the parts store is selling me the right pump. All they ask is it a V8, 305 and say yes and nothing more. I would think they would ask if its a TBI or MFI something more detailed. I have a feeling that they are not giving me the correct pump. I went to talk to them about it and they say its the one. Don't know anymore..
RUSTY69 Mar 15th, 06, 01:24 PM i dont know much about the tbi's is there just one injector on the throttle body? mabey replace that, or remove urs and turn the key and see what it does, i have an all carb 84z28, so im not to educated on the tbi cars.

Some models came with two injectors.

There is a difference between the two pumps.
TBI, two barrel design carb, sorta, needs 9-13 PSI fuel pressure.
MFI, one injector per cylinder and an air plate on the manifold, needs 45-50 PSI fuel pressure.
BonzoHansen Mar 16th, 06, 06:32 AM You have TBI. There were no 2bbl carbs on V8s in many years. In fact, in 89, I don't think there were any carbs anymore.
Bad injector, plugged filter, bad fuel pressure regulator, bad pump would be primary culprits, I think. You need to have the fuel pressure checked, as mentioned. That is a hard pump to change (it is in the tank), so I would check it first.
Go buy a Haynes Manual at the auto parts store & start reading. Good luck.
jonmoore97 Mar 16th, 06, 09:21 AM Thanks, that says alot. I feel better and will go with this info to the parts store.

It starts but barley because not enough fuel is getting to the carb. Then shuts, but its a very rough start.
BillK Mar 16th, 06, 07:17 PM jon,
Dont take this wrong, but you have already wasted the money on a new fuel pump that you probably did not need. Judging from your questions, you will probably SAVE money by taking the car to a competant shop that can troubleshoot it and just fix the problem, rather than throwing parts ( $$$$ ) at it until it is fixed.
Just my opinion,
l1tech Mar 16th, 06, 08:15 PM A simple test that you can do is to disconnect the injector wiring, there is a plug at each injector that has 2 wires in it, disconnect it, get yourself a test light, turn the ignition on and check to see if there is power at the injector wiring, I believe it is either a pink or purple wire. If you have power connect your test light to battery + and probe the wire that didn't have power, now have an assistant try to start the car, if the test light flashes and you had power in the previous step that means that the computer is working the injector. If none of this makes sense to you then take BillK's advice and take it to a competent shop before you just waste your money buying unneeded parts.
l1tech Mar 16th, 06, 08:17 PM Does your ignition key have a chip in it(a little piece of metal that sticks out of it) I can't remember if the PassLock security system was around in 89. If it does this may be your problem.

Thanks, that sounds like a great idea.
Well do tomorrow.

yes it does. I look into that aswell, another great idea. As I can remeber I think it takes a fuse, I'll check that to make sure it hasn't pop or something..

Thanks again..

Well try to see if injectors are working.

Yes it does, I see if the fues for the pass lock has pop or something.
