Hey guys, I was cleaning up the engine out of my Camaro while it was on the stand, and was going to use a wire wheel and remove the loose paint, and respray it. After brushing the block, I can see some yellow markings under the paint, and now I'd like to know what they say. It appears as though the previous owner just repainted over the original chevy orange, and the original paint is still underneath. How is the best way to remove the paint without removing the markings? Should I use some stripper on it and try to keep it rinsed so the markings remain? Any help in the matter would be greatly appreciated.

spray bomb chevy orange is pretty whimpy. Start with a mild solvent and work your way up. Wax and grease remover (DX330) will easily strip most spraybomb orange. Mineral spirits next. If you need to use laquer thinner, you'll probably lose the paint underneath too.

Normally you'll find the same suffix that's stamped on the pad written upside-down on both sides of the block (it was upside-down for the first 2/3 of the engine assembly line), in yellow, white, or orange grease pencil; that's what told the assemblers what innards to install in it. The pad wasn't stamped until after the heads went on (on small-blocks); big-blocks had the pad stamped just before the heads went on.

Thanks to both of you for the input.
This motor was bought over the counter, as a short block, so there's no stamp on the pad. That's one reason that I would like to see what is written on the side.
