View Full Version : anyone have a "system" in early camaro?
silver_streak67 Mar 16th, 06, 09:32 PM i have a 67 that i want a decent system, i have four orion 10 inch subwoofers, and a pioneer 760 watt amp ill probably only use two of them, but has anyone put a system in their early gen camaro, and tell wheres the best place to put everything, like in a box, or mount them where the back seat is and use the trunk as a box, i dont wanna cut anything up so thats not an option, anything to help would be nice- derek
HarleyD67 Mar 16th, 06, 10:25 PM I haven't finished my system yet, but I've been looking at a set up very similar for the last 6-8 mos. I plan to build a box to fit up behind the rear seat and mount the amp in the middle with a sub on either side . I also already have 4 way 6x9's in the deck and 100w twin speaker in the dash. A friend of mine hade this same set up in his '72 Nova, but he was pushing over 1000 watts with 2 more 4" speakers in the kick panels.
importkiller69ss Mar 16th, 06, 11:24 PM i have 2 memphis 10"s on a custom leather upostered box in my trunk with a 1000 watt amp.. 2 6x9"s in the rear decklid. and 2 4.5's in the dash on a 400 watt amp with 4 tweeters...sounds great....... and has good bass...just get the box made neat and uposterd and it will fit right in the car
Steptoe Mar 17th, 06, 01:59 PM Best sounds are a nice loppy cam, into a duel 3" system, couple good turbo mufflers and wind the windows down, and drive thru a tunnel for max effect.
Anything else on a classic muscle car defeats the purpose.
1000 watt amps.....Thats what jappa boy racer cars are for
kilroy396 Mar 18th, 06, 07:57 AM I couldn't agree more. I just bought a real 69 Z that had a "Thumpn-N- Bumpn "system". It was installed at the expense of every componet it came across. Tach wires in the way - cut'em, console wires in the way.. Cut them too! Control head won't fit in the dash - cut it too, bolt an eq under that! Mount tweaters on the dash, pull out orginal speaker run wires thru grille and bolt phaser shifter to bottom of cardboard glove compartment! Mount 6 inchers in the doors easy - cut door pannels and supporting frames! Mount 10's on press wood and screw it to the back of the seat brace - seat vibrates to much?? Duck tape the frame, lots of duck tape! Amp and cd changer in the trunk, jack mount in the way... Cut it off! Power lets go straight to the alternator! Car wouldn't start reliably, but hey it had a system!
It took over 2 hours to remove the "system" from this classic.
Once I repair all the damage caused by the installation of the "system" I will install a correct AM radio in the dash and put in a "hidden stereo" utilizing the 6X9s in the package tray and 4's in the kick pannels like it could have come with.
If you want to "Pimp Your Ride" why don't your sell the classic American car and buy a disposable import!

Jappa = disposable import
kilroy396 Mar 18th, 06, 04:12 PM I'm with you, just hadn't heard it put the way.
importkiller69ss Mar 18th, 06, 07:29 PM well in my camaro i never cut taped cajun egineered anything....i worked in an audio store for a few years and everything went in professionaly...yeah maybe i am 19 and some may not agree with alot of bass but that doesnt mean i roll down the street thumpin everything in site...i just like good music all music...but yeah some may not agree but that should be up to the owner of the car but dont destroy the car puttin everyhting in........you dont have to have a import to have good sound and a clean install...you dont even see any of my speakers or amps and everything is covered in leather and i didnt cut my dash to put in the cd palyer
Steptoe Mar 18th, 06, 08:49 PM We are pulling your tit a bit m8 lol
Big diff beteen a pro job and a hack..Thu the stiil cant beat the sweet music of a well setup 8

pulling your tit = teasing a little in good humour
rmadsen55 Mar 18th, 06, 10:39 PM I see no problem with installing a sweet system in a classic. I personally wouldn't go and fill it full of monitors and bling, but nice sound, absolutely! I am intending to put a nice soundsystem in my car. I am planning to build my car for comfort and style with custom interior, leather seats, and a nice system, maybe even GPS. There is no reason you need to hack a car to bits to make it sound good, lots of people have done awesome jobs customizing classics without making them loose their muscle car character.
Everyone has got their own thing that makes their dream car their's. I hate how everybody has to go and criticize anything that they personally wouldn’t do to their car. Let people enjoy what they are doing and if you don't have something constructive to say, just bite your tongue. I understand sometimes people are just teasing but the line is easily crossed especially in impersonal forums when you don't really how a person intended their comment. Sorry for the rant...
Anyway, back on topic. Silverstreak, check out pro-touring.com A bunch of people over there have built some awesome cars and I bet you can find some with nice systems installed. Good luck with you project!! Let us know how it turns out
Joe Harrison Mar 18th, 06, 10:44 PM Do what you want with it and enjoy it. Pass on the import junk and modify your Camaro as you please..........it's yours. Don't let some premadonna get in your way.
Joe

Import may have taken the wrong end of the stick, at least he doesnt go wacking the crap out of those around with it, So I answered clarifing..From the qualty of Imports answer I have no doubt the guy has a sence of humour, and is quite able to stand up and speak for himself without someone else sticking their beak into something they had no part of in the 1st place....Quote: "ranting "
And crossing the line?...get off the grass m8 the unnessary holyer than Thu "rant" falls more into the definition, AFTER things are sorted.
Smile life is to short for anything less
silver_streak67 Mar 19th, 06, 02:45 AM thanks for the replys with help, its appreciated, im with the ones who say not to cut it up too, not one stock peice on my car is cut up, anything that i modify i take the old peice out and fab a new one to cut up if possible, so i agree with not cutting up a classic- derek
Steptoe Mar 19th, 06, 01:43 PM Still recon the sound of a good loppy 8 is better...
But have been thinking
1000 watt amps.....Thats what jappa boy racer cars are for
Nope dont go along with that now....
Jappas just dont justify the cost or time...
Good sound system in the work shop instead lol
ctrghtous Mar 19th, 06, 02:15 PM I have always considered dual exhaust to be the original car stereo... and I know in my car when I stomp on it, it wouldnt much matter what kind of system the car had, the only thing I can hear is good old American horsepower, and that's just how I like it.
but certainly to each their own, I know when I was 16 I had plans to put a big speaker box in the trunk of the Camaro and have all kind of amps but alas, I never did, I have two 6x9's in the rear shelf and put speakers in the door. I wouldnt have put the door speakers in but the holes got cut back when I thought I needed to have a system...
btw I have a couple amps and boxes if anyone is interested, I think I outgrew it.
kz1000ltd Mar 19th, 06, 02:26 PM I have built a couple of systems for 1st generation Camaros, as long as it's professionally done, and you don't hack up the dash to do it, I don't see anything wrong with it. Sometimes, like at carshows, when the car is NOT running, it's nice to be able to listen to some good tunes. The only problem I have with that now is my new Camaro has an electric fuel pump that goes on with the ignition, so that doesn't work either! I may splice in a shut off switch, or may even convert to a high volume mechanical pump, haven't decided yet. No matter, it sounds good going down the road, I've got a Sanyo shaft style head unit, Kenwood EQ, Kenwood 6x9's, Kenwood 3x5's in the kick panels, Kenwood 10's in a very nicely constructed bandpass sub box, and (2) Kenwood 1000 Watt amps mounted in the trunk, sounds awesome! I'll post some pics next time I get a chance, haven't driven the car much the last few months, and I only finished the install last weekend!! It's actually raining cats and dogs here in Dallas this weekend, WOO HOO!!!!!
Steptoe Mar 19th, 06, 03:41 PM only thing I can hear is good old American horsepower
Im not a fan of the american accent...American V8 HP with a Kiwi accent, now you are talking lol
Sry guys just fooling around lol
ExileMo Mar 19th, 06, 07:07 PM An excellent sounding system in a Camaro can easily be done for minimal investment. You don't need a ton of subwoofers or amplifiers, you just have to ask yourself what do want or what are your expectations in a stereo system? Its same as when building a motor, or the car itself.
But lets face it most people will put some sort of stereo in their rig and its no different than any other part of the car (exhaust, bodywork, motor, etc). With a little help and know how you will have a smile on your face at the end of the day.
I will be glad to help anyone with specific car audio questions, (camaro or not) drop me an email or post here.
bkcarlock69 Mar 20th, 06, 08:19 PM I have 2 kicker 12s with 800 watts, 6x9s and 6inches in the kick panels with 300 watts. 500 hp big block with 3 inch pipes with a rumble. I like both worlds.
I built a box & put behind the seat, took the seat out & attatched it to the supports. It hits good. Long live rock!!!
importkiller69ss Mar 20th, 06, 08:35 PM same with me my small block has enought power with 3" flowsand alot of rumblem i feell you bkcarlock69 i love the best of both worlds also i love the sound of my engine but also love the sound of great shounidng music
jdogg23 Mar 23rd, 06, 09:40 PM just head phone it baby. yee haa. let the horseys make the rumblin bass.
EZRydda Mar 24th, 06, 02:50 PM ah, dont worry. the factory exhaust would be louder that 2 orion 10's and a 760 watt amp. my third gen has a 355 in it w/ 3" exhaust lots of work done to the motor. but on the other end of the car i have 2 treo engineering 12" subs, a 1.5 farat capacitor, and a 2400 watt legacy amp. this car has lots of power in it where ever you look. if your gonna have a loud system in it, just make shure the exhaust rivals it.
