View Full Version : Do you carry a spare?
fishin4info Mar 17th, 06, 12:15 PM What are you guys with aftermarket wheels and brakes doing for spares? I have a 68 with Baer disc brakes and Billet Vintiques 16x8 wheels and was thinking of whether or not to buy another wheel and tire of the same size for a spare or find some type of spare from a later model car to use. The car has not had a spare since I have owned and do not like the thought of having my car stranded on the side of the road when I get it finished. Do people without just rely on AAA?
ratman228 Mar 17th, 06, 12:30 PM No spare for me, I just rely on AAA. How often do you drive the car? Me personally, I only drive the car about 4000 miles per year so how many flats could I get driving only 4000 miles. I will take my chances and save myself some money by not having to buy another wheel but if someone uses the car as a daily driver it would probably make sense to have a spare.
67 Convertible Mar 17th, 06, 01:00 PM I have a spare...no jack...but I have a spare:clonk:
JimM Mar 17th, 06, 01:04 PM I've never carried a spare...
but I've been told that a space-saver from a mid 80's S10 will fit, and when it's time to drive that bad boy 2600 miles round trip to Billings, I'll leave the subwoofer at home and purchase and carry a spare.... and a jack.
fishin4info Mar 17th, 06, 01:12 PM I was also wandering thinking about a jack since I do not have one that is very transportable.
67 Convertible Mar 17th, 06, 01:31 PM You can get a small bottle jack at Wally World for $10-$15...just haven't gotten around to picking one up.
zdld17 Mar 17th, 06, 02:06 PM I have found these little "Rallye Jacks" that are hyd scissors type, collasp pretty low , for low cars and have their own plastic carrying case, then they have these little break down "L " lug wrenches with two sockets that are flat cased. Walmart , target , Pepboys, Oreilly , etc.
These are neat to carry and still have room for a regular matching wheel , one lawn chair, a tool case, spare alt, two belts , clean up polish bag and room for one travel bag . You would look very unKool out on side of road with a flat, No spare or jack. City driving ok, but not on long roads to Billings, Mt. I put an XM radio in place of all the sound stuff.
Farm Boy Mar 17th, 06, 02:56 PM I have a jack and a spare tire in the trunk. It is a bias-ply tire and I am not sure how it would handle with the radial tires, but it should get me home. Another concern is the spare is 26” tall and my rear tires are 27”. I imagine it would not take long to burn up the clutches in my posi rear end running mismatched tires. I hope I never have to use it.
zdld17 Mar 17th, 06, 04:38 PM Check out that temp doughnut from the 80's that Jim was talking about. Also you can always put that mismatch on front and keep rear all the same if you are worried about burning posi clutches. Little more work but worth it.
Larger Dave Mar 17th, 06, 05:10 PM I carry a cell phone and a AAA card with 100 miles towing, I don't need the extra weight, and my car uses 5x5" 1/2" studs that don't fit many spares.
Steptoe Mar 17th, 06, 06:20 PM Its all a matter of having good tyres with good tread and faith.
In 20 yrs the only time a throw a spare in is on long trips ..500/1000mile round trip. Then I throw a basic tool box in, small floor jack, and axle stands, and the spare is an old cross ply on one of the orginal rims that is the same diameter as the rear tyres. This has also been a total waste of time ** see below
With a posi diff they DO NOT like odd ball diameter on each axle. With a LPG tank the tyre just fits in the boot. (trunk in American)
Faith,
yep have had a couple puntures and blew a tyre to ribbons at over 100 mph...every time its been in the driveway, outside a tyre shop, even ofter hours the the guys have been working on a private project.
**When 1st generation Camaros where designed they also put into the car the abilty to sence WHEN and WHERE to have a punture..I kid you not.
redvetteharley Mar 17th, 06, 06:40 PM No spare for me. I'm used a vette so I just bought a small 12v air compressor and a plug kit in case something happens, Anything worse than that I just call. LOL
327!275hp!Convt! Mar 17th, 06, 07:01 PM When I was in my twenties I would drive from Texas to northern California via Utah on semi-bald ties in an old 68 rs convertible. Back then I figured I would just hitch-hike my way out of a flat tire situation. I never had a flat during all those cross country trips. Since those days I've gone 3 or 4 miles away from home on relatively new tires, come back to the car & found a flat. The moral... You just NEVER know when or where a flat is going to happen. Now days, I always have a full size spare in the truck. If you already have a full size spare tire, a flat ain't no big deal. If you ain't got no spare.... its a big deal, cell phone or not. Unless maybe YOU are in your teens or twenties. :)
speedfreek Mar 17th, 06, 07:30 PM Havn't had a spare in 10 yrs. never had a flat either (knock on wood!) fixing to fill the trunk with speakers BOOM BOOM!! that's for yall old farts:)
BonzoHansen Mar 17th, 06, 07:31 PM i have a donut out of a late model something.
thorpe67RS Mar 17th, 06, 08:06 PM and when it's time to drive that bad boy 2600 miles round trip to Billings, I'll leave the subwoofer at home and purchase and carry a spare.... and a jack.
WOW! 2600 miles!! You da man! I did a 600 mile round trip last summer and said that was the longest i would do with the Camaro. Course the 5 speed will certainly make things easier now.
JimM Mar 17th, 06, 09:07 PM trip's gonna be a GAS! Can't wait to meet Dano, and hook up with Click again, and who ever else can make it. I've done a few 4 hour there 4 hour back day trips, 2600 in 8 days with the new tko and re-upholstered seats (hmmm, bout time to tackle them seats) will be a breeze!
Car nut Mar 21st, 06, 07:11 PM What a great topic. I do cary a spare but the car stays local. I have 17x7 & 17x8s and a 15" spare. Am I going to blow up my 12 bolt posi even local like 20/30 miles? Should I keep the spare at home, There is always AAA w/ 100 miles of towing. Thanks for your ideas. Brian
importkiller69ss Mar 21st, 06, 07:14 PM i carry a spare off an s10 and a little floor jack and it is all hidden in the trunk behind my speaker box
Car nut Mar 22nd, 06, 07:38 PM I have a convertable w/ a glass window. With a spare there is not much room for anything else.
rlovell383 Mar 22nd, 06, 09:22 PM Triple A all the way!!!!

cd playa Mar 22nd, 06, 10:31 PM I carry a full size spear and the original bumper jack just for show, but I also carry a small hydralic jack in case I really do have a flat.
click Mar 23rd, 06, 07:54 AM I also have the S10 space saver spare and a bottle jack, I'd never consider using my original jack and have it slip and punch a hole thru the rear panel or my grille. Since I have the Endura bumper, Id never jack up on that either. The space saver gives more storage on top of it and under it in the hollows for 'stuff'. I also carry a can of that spray bomb tire fix, just in case. :)
Wife and I drove to Seattle in 03 to their Chev show, over 5,000 mile round trip, it was a blast. We need to get more of you folks driving further, like a kid learning to ride your bike, you get further from home with confidence in your ride. Drive it :) :beers:
Car nut Mar 23rd, 06, 05:56 PM Soo many decesions.
RickD Mar 24th, 06, 04:49 AM Hagerty 110 mile flatbed towing, cell phone and a can of fix-a-flat.
Car nut Mar 24th, 06, 01:51 PM You're right. I have AAA w/ 100 miles, I own a cell phone, I don't know if I would put that stuff into my 17" Intro. Thanks. Brian.
You're car looks great and it must be fast to need that roll cage.
DjD Mar 24th, 06, 02:50 PM Wheels and tires are no problem as you can always find something close to the right height to get you to place than can fix a flat. 12" or 13" brakes is another story... A spare off a newer vette or 4th gen should work and will take up less room in the trunk, just find a bottle or sizzor jack that will fit under your car as already suggested.
I have AAA 100 mile and a cell phone but find good cruising places don't always leave you with a cell signal. If you don't have a spare, carry a can of liquid tire patch just in case. you really don't want to get a flat and have to walk several miles to get a signal to be able to place a call to AAA.
Oh, if you do end up using the liquid to patch and inflate a tire get it fixed asap and let the guy doing the repair know ahead of time about the liquid...
Car nut Mar 27th, 06, 07:33 PM A mess indeed. Thanks.
CarlC Mar 27th, 06, 08:03 PM 12" or 13" brakes is another story...
C4's had two different spare's, 12" and 13". The 13" is needed, and fits very well, for BAER and/or PBR equiped 13" systems. Mine was $75 and was never used.
I have not tried the C4 13" spare on a C5 caliper/rotor car. This rotor mounts much farther outboard and may not fit.
I do not carry the spare on local runs (under 100 miles/AAA range) but do for road trips.
HILROD Mar 28th, 06, 09:02 AM I have BAER 13 discs and I bought a matching 16 rim that barely clears the front brakes. I just got a tire size that matched my 17s in height.
jacket Mar 29th, 06, 07:09 PM I picked up a S-10 space saver today for $35 in perfect condition. Fits great on the front disk brakes and does not use up all the room in the trunk for a conv. I think I'll get a spare tire cover to keep it looking orig. Thanks for the advice.
I use a '89 Corvette spare. For a jack I use a late model Honda jack and tool kit. The jack is a low profile design that accomodates the ride height of my Camaro and the Honda tool kit has a 19mm/3/4" lug wrench to fit the stock size lugnuts.

thedugan Mar 29th, 06, 08:55 PM I carry a space saver I got from a junk yard and an original jack.
And I've had to use them both.
edd Gordon Mar 30th, 06, 03:05 PM No Spare or Jack but I do have a scissor Jack under by work bench and need to get an S10 Donut incase My Cell Phone and AAA card get lost
click Mar 30th, 06, 04:18 PM One thing to keep in mind if you have a Posi, the spare should be the same height as the other rear tire when inflated so the posi doesnt get stressed.
19topless69 Jul 10th, 06, 09:02 AM I have c5 vette brakes and use an 05 gto mini spare they are 17x4 aluminum
rims, you can get them for about $80 from fparts salvage or ebay .
zdld17 Jul 10th, 06, 06:02 PM This issue really hit home as I returned from the Rockies Run in Billings. I do carry a spare but 15", my custom wheels are 16. As I approached the Texas state line, during a refuel I noticed one tire low and I had previously had it repaired some 700 miles before. No air available at convenience store , so used my fix a flat can that I carry for emergency, Needless to say I was prepared to use this smaller tire but same aspect ratio . Do carry something and try to carry a can of fix a flat,, Just in case. Maybe two of them , they dont take up that much space.
ace's68 Jul 10th, 06, 08:49 PM i dont carry a spare for weight purposes only, and i dont drive the car enough to get a flat, and theres always AAA
