My M20 has P9A30A stamped on it...and no vin. Why is there no vin? Was this a replacement tranny, bought over the counter?

The tranny isn't original to my car, but the date is close enough I am going to use it...it was given to me by my dad, so it is hard deal to pass up. I have no idea about the history of it...it just came with a car he bought, a 55 chevy, which of course it wasn't original to. |
