View Full Version : low fuel indicator
69Rfine Mar 24th, 06, 07:10 PM I really need help on this one! I have a Sept. 1969 Z/28. I have factory console gauges. I have heard of a device that warned you of low fuel. Was this an option? Was this light in the dash? I can see in my dash gauge a slot for "fuel". i have wires and module that looks like the one pictured in rick's (pg. 114,item #cg-25) that is not attached to anything, coming from the fuel gauge in the console, but it also looks like there is no one way that there is enough wire to even begin to reach my "fuel" slot in the dash! On the end it appears where a bulb should go. I don't feel like a total idiot on this one! I had 4 buddies look at this as well and they could not figure it out either! One did suggest that it looked like the piece that looked like it held a bulb went into a hole that was between fuel gauge and oil gauge. Please help! Thanks! Larry, 69rfine

The low fuel indicator light is in the dash, if I remember right a yellow wire feeds it.
I believe the low fuel indicator was standard with the console gauge package, I'm not 100% sure.
Your module does belong under the console gauge pod and should be attached to your gas gauge. It is possible that yours was disconnected at some point. Some tire of the fuel light comming on and if the module malfunctions it could register low fuel continually. My guess it was disconnected under the gauge pod at some point.

click Mar 24th, 06, 09:29 PM Here is your console wiring diagram to follow but yes its the yellow wire to make it all work.
console wire diagram (http://www.brainerd.net/~knudsen/69RS/Interior/Consolewiring.jpg)
this is a pic of the low fuel unit, I taped it to the underside of the console, then hooked the wires according to the diagram, works like a charm. :)

69Rfine Mar 25th, 06, 05:45 AM Thanks Jim and Doug for your reply. Great picture Jim! Jim, the bulb that is taped to the back of your console does that go to the dash? does not seem to have enoough wire! I have this piece and the bulb is missing. does the yellow wire going into your harness go up to the dash? I just assumed this was feeding into the console gas gauge not away to the dash. Thanks for all of your help! Larry,69rfine
Mark C Mar 25th, 06, 05:55 AM The low fuel sender unit (black cylinder with the light) stays in the console, the light doesn't do anything. The unit connects the yellow wire to ground when fuel gets down around 2 or 3 gallons. The bulb in the dash already has a pink 12V wire connected to the socket, all it needs is the ground wire connected to it.
69Rfine Mar 25th, 06, 06:20 AM I think I've got it now! the bulb in the console had me and my buddies confused. What is the easiest way to check to see if the light in dash is working properly? Of course without litterly running the car low on fuel! this of course would be the more fun way! Thanks! Larry,69Rfine
JimM Mar 25th, 06, 06:38 AM easiest way I can think of is to force a "fuel empty" condition in the whole system by grounding the tan wire (to the sending unit) in the trunk. Stick a short peice of wire in that connector and touch the end to a tailight housing, the guage should show empty and the low fuel light should come on.
z28doug Mar 25th, 06, 09:27 AM While were on the subject.......
Why is there a bulb in the low fuel sending unit? Was it used interchangeably with other GM models?
Also, was the low fuel indicator standard with the '69 console gauges?
Doug
click Mar 25th, 06, 09:35 AM Yes the low fuel was part of the console guages and yes the unit was used in other chev or GM cars too that might have made use of a bulb in the unit itself, but the camaro used the dash light instead. :)
Oh and in my pic there, there isnt a bulb in the unit but there is a rivet thats part of the console box itself that kinda looks like a bulb in that pic angle.
z28doug Mar 25th, 06, 10:04 AM Click,
Thanks for the clarifaction on the rivit. It thought it was a small bulb and didn't remember a bulb being in my sending unit.
Interesting post, I learned something new (unit was used in other GM cars) Now I know the reason there is a bulb recepticle in the module. Hadn't really thought a whole lot about it but it all makes sense now.
Enjoy!!!
