i can buy very cheap a running 396 with block# 3855961 and head #3872702.
can someone tell me what this is out of? would it be a good choice for a
nasty big block build up?

Block - 3855961....396.......65-66...2 or 4 bolt

The 3855961 is a 396 2 bolt main block from a 65 or 66 full size (325HP), or a 66 chevelle (325 or 360HP).

The Heads are 66 only used in the full sized cars (396/325 or 427/390), Chevelle (396/325 or 396/390) and Corvette (427/390). The intake size is 2.06 and the exhaust is 1.72, with a 98.427cc.

Good starting point for any build-up.
