In reading many posts I see allot of people complain about the cap being slightly off. I had the same problem but it was an easy fix.

Get yourself a big set of tongue and grove pliers or whatever you call them, you'll need two people.

Hold the backside of the cap with pliers by the tabs that would lock on the filler neck, just hold so it doesn't slip, do not over squeeze so as not to crush it. It's easier with this side facing up.

Now the other person will hold the chrome finished side, twist accordingly to correct position when locked on filler tube. Takes about two minutes and it sits straight.

I recommend two strong people, wives and girlfriends might add frustration.

Just trying to give back some info for the years of using this great site.

Good advice.....I did mine in a vice with two pieces of rubber against each jaw. It worked out great. Now the R/S is vertical instead of at 11:00 position when the cap is fully tightened. I guess they get that way after many years of overtightening the cap.

What a timely post! I have been trying to figure out the best way to straighten my cap for the last four days and this solution has solved my problem!! Thank You!

Now, to find a source for the rubber gasket on the gas cap and the world will be OK.

Chris, that is a part they need to start reproducing since the rubber gaskets rot away after a few years. Until then I guess you have to cut your own.

I just trimmed the tab that is used as a stop to make it a little thinner.

CFunk it was your problem that finally led me to post, good to see your car as it was.

My filler tube and cap were new repo, and the cap was at 11:00 also. Glad I was able to point a few in the right direction.
