View Full Version : First Gen Value, Market, and more ebay questions
Domano 68 Mar 25th, 06, 10:30 PM It appears that the market for these cars right now is at a good point for a seller. What is the market like for these cars over the next 5 years? Will it continue to increase, steady off, or decline a bit? Thoughts and opinions please.
Now another ebay question. I am going to place my car on ebay soon. I definately will put a reserve price on it. I am trying to determine what that number will be. My concern is that if the reserve price is met before the auction is over, then the ending price will not be much over the reserve if above that price at all. I have a tendancy to believe people will be thinking "I am not going to buy this car for more than what he wants out of it". So my question for you all to ponder is what should I reserve it for. Right now I am asking $18,900 and a lot of you have said it is priced to low. "Price it in the low $20's". Thoughts and opinions here also.
Moderators, please do not move this post to the "Forum Classifieds" section. The shear number of readers here on this "Camaro Tech Forum" is far greater. I REALLY NEED A LOT OF INPUT HERE. By the way I do not think this is a "Forum Classifieds" type of post anyway. My $.02. Thanks...
nikkisdad Mar 25th, 06, 10:54 PM My thoughts on reserve price is this, if a item is properly advertised, lots of information, lots of pictures, good feedback, it will sell for about what it is worth even if the reserve is low. If you have too high of a reserve, and the car does not sell, people may think that the car has some kind of problem and may not want ot bid on a second auction. I have watched many cars go down that road, with the buyer reducing the reserve time after time. I do have some experience selling on e-bay with over 2500 feedback. Of course this is just one guys opinion. P.S. good luck no matter what course you take, Mike
Yellow69RSZ Mar 26th, 06, 12:24 AM Price the reserve where you would be happy to sell it for. If you over-price the car it may scare people thinking it's a step above where they can afford. If you're under on your pricing, it'll probably do more anyways. And if you go to replace it, you will typically find you will have to add more money to what you got for it to get a lesser car! I've gone this road a few times, good luck!
Sid69Z's Mar 26th, 06, 04:57 AM I would put the reserve at the bottom dollar that you will take for it. If there's at least 2 people who really want the car, it could go way above the reserve.
As far as the future price, I don't think anyone has a crystal ball to see the future. There may be some who have an educated guess but that's the best you can hope for. I think the value increases will surely level off one day but I would be surprised to see the values actually drop.....but that's just my opinion. I would only sell right now if I had to have the money for something else......like another project car ;)
Good Luck with your sell!!
magisnyc Mar 26th, 06, 06:03 AM I think what's really driving up the prices are the people who now think its cool to drive a musclecar. Most just want the look and don't really care about the mechanicals underneath. Once companies start selling the completed reproduction cars with modern drivetrains, I think the demand (and prices) for modified musclecars will come down.
The all original or rare option cars will always get top dollar because that's what collectors always look for.
As for the reserve price, that should be the absolute minimum you will sell your car for (after all possible haggling is done).
Anything over that should be profit.
kz1000ltd Mar 26th, 06, 07:46 AM Run the auction the first time with a reserve of 2 million dollars. People generally will bid the highest amount they will pay for the car. See how high it goes. You should get plenty of phone calls, make sure and have several contact #'s in your auction. Negotiate with those people as they call, find out who is serious and who is trying to get something for nothing. If you can make a deal outside of eBay, great, you avoid paying the final value fees and all is good. If you can't, list it again with a reserve that is the absolute LEAST amount you would take for the car and cross your fingers. I've seen the car and question and don't think you'll have a problem getting 20K for it. Good luck! KZ
Domano 68 Mar 29th, 06, 10:47 AM I have listed her on ebay. Thanks very much for all input!

Yeah, she jumped up to over $10,000 3 hours after the auction had started. Fun to watch but we'll see what happens.
go2fast Mar 30th, 06, 07:41 AM Looks like a nice car, but the posting needs more pics. None of the underside, interior, or engine compartment. I wouldn't even consider bidding on a car without a lot more pcis and details.

Thanks for your comments.
There is a link that I have placed in the ad that shows MANY detailed pictures. Here is the link, http://www.otelco.net/~dmnsmith2/68%20Camarosale.htm
69Red Apr 1st, 06, 05:54 PM I guess I think differently when it comes to listing on ebay...I have only sold about 50 items.
I don't like reserves personally so I place the starting bid a the minimum I am willing to accept for the item. That way the seller knows if they bid at least there is a chance they will get it.
I have bought a car off of ebay...and it is easy to figure out the reserve of a car if you are willing to be dishonest. I just figure it is better to tell people the least I am willing to accept and let them fight it out.
I have watched many a car on ebay that should and probably would have sold not meet the reserve only by a little bit at the end.
PLUS'''it costs you less to list with out a reserve.
I aggree with other posters that if you advertise well it and are realistic about the value it will sell....the reserve just seems to be a gimmick to try to drag a few more dollars out.
very nice car by the way...
just my opinion...throw darts if you must.

Stikbo Apr 1st, 06, 06:17 PM I think the auction looks good. I wouldn't have my feedback private though. Potential bidders will think you are hiding something.

I wondered about that, but I do have 100% positive feedback so there is nothing to hide.

Thank you for your thoughts. I've actually seen somewhat opposite of what you discussed. When auctions start out high, the bidders are few and far between. For whatever reason, more people will bid when there is a lower starting price. Ebay even encourages this. As far as the reserve goes, I use it to cover my investment. I have no idea what my auction will sell for so gotta protect. Anyway, thanks again for sharing.
69Red Apr 1st, 06, 11:06 PM I totally agree that you will get more bids by starting off low. by setting the minimum with out a reserve you will get the real bidders who have the $.
Basically weather you have a reserve or a high start bid...just set it at what you need to cover yourself.
Please understand that most of my listing is small dollar items....cars may be a totally different ball game.
I wish you well and I hope you get what you are looking for.
My wife and I had a numbers matching 68 210 hp camaro very similar to yours that we sold to buy the ss we own now so I have a soft spot for your car.

kz1000ltd Apr 4th, 06, 10:15 AM Here's a perfect example of how NOT to list a car on eBay! I especially like the bricks on the hood! The first thing that went through my mind was, 12K for that? Think about how much more you could get for this car with just a little bit of time and effort? It would probably clean up pretty nice!

Dayton68Z28 Apr 4th, 06, 10:58 AM Buy it now for 12k, what a joke. That's a 5k car at best.
srober76 Apr 4th, 06, 10:52 PM When I had my car appraised in June the appraiser had 3 books he was using to help come up with a value. I due believe but I may be mistaken that the body and frame and I assume in good shape with nothing else was averaging 7-8k.
LoL but yea the bricks.....
