I want to add a rearview mirror to the passenger door of my '68 deluxe coupe camaro. This car never had a mirror on this door. Please let me know if you have done this and what ALL is involved to do the job. Thanks! rdstraus@att.net

I did it and its simple. Just drill two holes and screw in the mounting bracket. Then one screw holds the mirror to the bracket. Positioning is the only tricky part. I measured the position of the drivers side and then put the passenger side in the exact same place. I then found that it does not quite bend in far enough to be perfectly positioned. Could be the repo's don't move as much, but anyways I broke the first one trying to bend it in to far as I wanted it perfect. It's close, but with it fully bent in, I have to move my head slightly towards the passenger side to get the view I should have without moving. That means that it might have helped to put it a little farther forward then I have it. The best bet would be to have someone hold it and check it before drilling the two holes.

I should add that I have the plain standard manual adjust mirrors that consist of a mounted arm and a swivel mirror head. I think all 68's are the same, but just in case you have something different.

My passenger side also doesn't bend in enough. However, the previous owner had 2nd gen mirrors and there were so many holes I wasn't sure which to use. Anyone have a mirror that actually works for you and, if so, what distance from the door leading edge is it mounted?

Green68, I had exactly the same experience as you. I don't know whether its the repro mirrors or whether i should have done as you said and moved the mirror further forward but it definitely doesn't have as much travel as the drivers side one. I had a little success with loosning the screws and twisting the base a little off horizontal to use the angle of the door panel to bring the mirror round a little. You can't go very far so it doesn't look odd but I can see a little better than before. Infuriating....

I just installed a repro mirror, too. Have the same problem. It's next to useless. I thought it was just mine!
But at least it looks good from the outside.....

I have one on the passenger side of my 69. The adjustment is fine for me but if it had to move any further, it wouldn't make it.

Ditto, anyone with an original installed on a 68? Is it the same situation?

Mine is fine on the 69. Pretty sure it was a repo mirror. Maybe a different manufacturer? Got a left and right side from Rick's.

on the subject of repro outside mirrors, how's the repro vs. the GM? I haven't tried yet, but usually when the resto house sells GM (as opposed to NOS) it means you can still get the part at the local Chevy dealer. We usually think of dealers being an expensive place to buy parts, but compared to resto houses, it often is cheaper!!

The problems I have had with the repros, apart from the lack of movement on the mirror head, is the shape of the bases. I have two different ones and neither matches the shape of the base on the one I have on my driver's door. I don't know if that one is original. It probably isnt as virtually everything but the tires on my 68 seems to have been bought from Classic Industries (thos receipts tell a story....)
Also, none of the mounting gasket sets I have bought have a gasket that matches the shape of the base on either of the mirrors I have. The gasket on my drivers door mirror sits snug along the edge of the mirror base and is obviously the right one for this mirror but the others are nowhere near. I had a close look at a beautifully restored Chevelle parked outside the pub the other night and -sure enough - he had the same problem. The gaskets are too big and the wrong contour so you have a 1/8 inch extra of black gasket sticking out from under the front of the mirror. I know its minor but when they sell the gaskets with the mirrors and they aren't anything like a decent fit then thats a bit crappy in my opinion.

I purchased two repo's from Classic for my 69 and they both were great. The only problem is with the adjustment on the passenger side. It was the same with the original mirror however. They just don't have enough adjustment.

I thought it was just me. It's sure nice to know that I'm not as dumb as I think I am every once in a while.
