View Full Version : carn't see in the dark
xx69xx Mar 28th, 06, 01:14 AM Hi everyone, lm a new member to team camaro, and l was hopeing someone out there could possibly help me. Im restoring my 69 camaro 396 4 speed witch lm try to keep as original as possible, the problem is my car has no reverse lights, and as far as l can tell l need the switch that go's on the top of the steering column, and the reverse lock out rod that runs from the gear box to the base of the steering column to make it all work, these parts are missing from the car and lm not quite shaw if this all l need to make them work again any help would be greatly appeciated. Cheers from Australia
z28doug Mar 28th, 06, 06:47 AM Welcome xx69xx,
It sounds like if you replace those parts your reverse lights will work again. Typically it's just the rods and bellcrank missing, tossed in the garbage at some point in time to make room for headers..
Enjoy!!!
Doug
JimM Mar 28th, 06, 06:53 AM you can turn the ring on the steering column to turn on the backup lights. It's the first part that sticks out of the dash. If you imagine where a column shifter would be if you had one, that's it.

He said that the switch is missing. Turning the column won't work if the switch is missing. An easy way to fix the back up lights is use the universal switch that mounts on the shifter. The switch is activated by the reverse linkage when reverse is engaged. You can make extension wires to run to the wire ends at the base of the column so you can hook up the original switch if you want to. This setup is good for people who don't want the reverse lock hooked up.

I definitely agree that the original setup is the way to go. I was just offering a quick fix to use until the correct parts could be bought. I must say however after years of driving that having to put a car back in Reverse every time you park it is very aggravating to me. I disconnected the reverse lock on my driver and made a plug in harness to hook to the original wire ends running to the universal back up light switch. I kept everthing so I can hook up the original setup any time I want. Just my 2 cents.
Pacecarjeff Mar 29th, 06, 11:59 AM Putting in reverse is a safety feature.
I park all my cars in reverse - even the ones with no lock outs.
Also it is a theft deterrent - for what ever little deterrent it is.
(A child could steal one of these) It locks the steering wheel and the car in gear.
Original is the only way if at all possible.
xx69xx Mar 29th, 06, 06:41 PM Thanks guys for the input but lm going too go the original way on this car its all original apart from a few missing items.(396/350hp 4 speed factory black plus yellow houndstooth interior).I think its better too keep this one original.
