I was told that the four heat shields for the spark plugs, that two were welded and two were screwed together with a screw. What ones go where and why the two different means of attaching? Or totally set me straight on this! Thanks! Larry,69Rfine

Its been quite a while since Ive seen a set of originals. Dont remember how they were made. The new shield set comes with two of each, like you mentioned.

If that is how they were from the factory, I would guess the reason for the screwed in ones were made that way to make assembly easier, i.e. you may have to add the shield after another part was installed.

I really dont know. Hopefully JohnZ will see this thread and set us straight.

The drivers side shields are screwed on to the mounting braces.
Because the braces can not be removed with the exhaust manifolds on.

The passenger sides were one piece (welded) because they can be accessed with out removing any parts.

I found this out the hard way years ago, after re-installing an engine, I could never get the front drivers one installed.
The mounting bolt for that one is actually under the motor mount - what a b--ch.

Jeff, I know exactly what your talking about.

I ran into the same thing a week or so ago putting them on an engine that was in the car. Pass side wasnt too bad. Had to pull the LH manifold away from the engine to get the front shield on. Still wasnt easy after that. Its definately buried under that mount.

It is really easy to install with the engine out.
But after that forgetaboutit.

I managed to get them all installed. Dont think I put both screw ins on the same side, though.

Think I'll leave em the way they are. Then again, I'll probably try to swap them around, since it'll probably bug me now. Hopefully I got the front LH one right
