'98 Suburban all factory equipment, 350, 4wd, auto, 103,000 miles

It's gotten to where when it's cold (ambient temp) on initial startup it seems like a cylinder is hydraulicing or kinda like an older engine with the timing advanced too far. Sometimes it takes a few tries to get it started. Once the engine starts and warms up some (5 min or so), you can shut it off and it will restart like normal everytime as well as when it's up to normal operating temp. It's running great like normal when it does start. It's only doing it while cold.

Here's what's been checked/changed:
New Starter
New Crank Position Sensor
New Dist. cap, rotor, wires, plugs
Battery terminals checked cleaned.
New spacer & bolt on positive double cable
Removed all spark plugs while cold, no fuel or water present
No water in oil
No check engine light

Any ideas??

I would suggest you do a cold compression check. Then do an operating temp comp check.

Put a timing light on it when cold to see where the timing is located when cold.

Is the PCM coolant temp sensor okay? Reads high ohms when cold, ie, 10Kohms. Connection good and corrosion free?

A friend has one and every 6-8 months, its on the hook for a new fuel pump. Thank God for GM's 1 yr warranty for parts & labor.

I would have never believed this and still don't understand it totally but it turned out to be the Dist. cap & rotor. Pulled it off and it looked like someone had been welding in it....cracked badly. These were changed less than 1,000 miles ago!

I can see this causing it not to start or running bad or even causing it to act as if the timing was advanced due to possibly trying to fire on the wrong cylinder. The confusing thing is that when it started, it ran great! No missing, hesitation or anything. Also, if it was warmed up it started and ran normal.

At least it was a relatively cheap fix......it just didn't make much sense!
