View Full Version : Malcohm Konner Chevrolet Paramus NJ COPO's
68Baldwin Apr 1st, 06, 06:50 AM Recently I was lucky enough to find my 1969 Lemans blue with Deluxe blue interior COPO Camaro I originally owned in the 70's.With the help from some local people I found it back in December of 2005.Well I was pretty sure I knew it was a Malcohm Konners by the body number being real close to 2 other Malcohm Konners Copo's and because I purchased this car from a guy in Lake Parsippany NJ back in the 70's which is not to far from Paramus.Well just recently I was lucky enough to have someone run a NICB report and it came back to Malcohm Konners 35-184.Car was delivered on 6/27/69.The Malcohm Konners 69 Copo Camaros and 69 Copo Chevelles are very unique cars. What makes them that is because of their options. If you go to past feature cars on the SYC site theirs a 69 RS Camaro and 69 Fathom green Chevelle that came from there.Well getting back to my car ,mine was a X-11 4spd car, with tinted glass, deluxe blue interior, factory tach/console with gauges,am/fm radio, vinyl top with rear spoiler.I didn't realized what I really had back then, but now I do!!Oh yeah Malcohm Konners also sold the 70 Yenko Duece and also sent some of their Corvettes over to Joel at Motion Performance for mods!! Dan
COPO9737 Apr 1st, 06, 08:30 AM Congrats on getting the COPO back Dan. Plan on a resto or leave as is? Any of the original drive train left?..................
edd Gordon Apr 3rd, 06, 06:10 PM I bought my 63 Impala 409 convertable from Malcom Konner new in 63 Wow that brings back memories I remember testing it out at Island Dragway The first nice weekend in late spring of 63
Car nut Apr 3rd, 06, 09:55 PM They are still around andI think they are the biggest Vette dealer in the country.
68Baldwin Apr 4th, 06, 05:53 AM Malcohm Konners is long gone, but Hawthorne Chevrolet took its place.Malcohm Konners was known for its HIPO Corvettes back then. The current owner of Hawthorne Chevrolet is 2 brothers, one being Gene M.Oh yeah from what I've been told, only 12 1969 Copo Camaros with Deluxe interior have been found, this is the first and only Blue Deluxe interior one found!! I won't mention the persons name who told me this(unless he gives me permission to),but he is from the CRG site and keeps records on all these cars.Maybe he will chime in.This car also raced at Raceway Park NJ under the name the Blue Mule....Dan
WildBillyT Apr 4th, 06, 10:32 PM Dan,

68Baldwin Apr 5th, 06, 06:07 AM Bill,Can't answer that one, don't know.Do you know of a Black 69 in our area that your not sure of? dan
WildBillyT Apr 5th, 06, 05:59 PM Bill,Can't answer that one, don't know.Do you know of a Black 69 in our area that your not sure of? dan
No, unfortuently not. But I remember hearing stories from my dad and uncles about a Newark street racer they used to call "The Polack" who ran a 427 Camaro on Rt. 21. Supposedly he worked for Potamkin and spent every dollar he had getting a COPO 427 car. I'm just kinda wondering if there is any info about it or him.
edd Gordon Apr 6th, 06, 06:22 PM The "Polack" I think was a guy named Billy Izocowsky forgive me Billy if I spelled your name wrong. There had been some writing about him in Hot Rod and Chevy Hiperformance by RM. If it is the same Guy I knew him and his brother when they lived in Hillside New Jersey his younger brother Bobby worked for me one summer in 1965 when he bought a brand new Red 65 Impala with a 396 in it, I think Billy raced a 66 Biscayne 427 alot of races in Newark where on McCarter hyway and forgive me McCarter if I spelled that name wrong I moved out of N J in 1970
edd Gordon Apr 6th, 06, 06:24 PM One other thought I think it was Route 22 not Route 21 in Union NJ where people street raced, but I again that was 40 years ago that I raced there
68Baldwin Apr 6th, 06, 09:02 PM Hi Ed,I believe I know who your talking about,Bill Isyckowski works up at Gearhart Chevrolet now.I believe he had ties to Wallace Chevrolet in Linden NJ too.Yes its RT22,not RT21.Do you remember the names,Carman Rotunda,Levi Holmes,Fredy Calas or Brooklyn Heavy? Dan
thedugan Apr 6th, 06, 09:23 PM I knew carmen sr. He owned van iderstein (sp?) in union.
68Baldwin Apr 6th, 06, 09:38 PM Doug,Carman use too ,but Van Iderstines is now closed in Union in the Center Median on Rt 22.Carman had his first Speed Shop in Bloomfield ,called Rotundas Speed Shop,he also was one of Booklyn Heavys drivers on his Pro Stock cars and Street racers.I meet Carman twice in person recently. Dan
WildBillyT Apr 6th, 06, 09:41 PM Hi Ed,I believe I know who your talking about,Bill Isyckowski works up at Gearhart Chevrolet now.I believe he had ties to Wallace Chevrolet in Linden NJ too.Yes its RT22,not RT21.Do you remember the names,Carman Rotunda,Levi Holmes,Fredy Calas or Brooklyn Heavy? Dan
I remember hearing about those guys, most notably Levi Holmes. From what I can tell, there was street racing on 21 (meet up at Rutts Hut), Avenue P, 22, 287, 95, and a bunch of other places.
It's cool to finally hear some more about "The Polack". I always wondered if anyone else knew of him. Didn't he have a sidekick or something named "Joey Panda Bear?"
edd Gordon Apr 7th, 06, 07:59 PM I knew Van Iderstein bothers the older one owned the Speed Shops back in the sixties but I forgot about that as I had left NJ in 1970 I heard of some of the other guys but not met them. There was another Hot Rod mechanic in that area named Bob Ogonowski I just remembered that just now
edd Gordon Apr 7th, 06, 08:03 PM 68 Baldwin I just remembered Carmen Rotunda I did meet him a few times and you say Billy is working still he must be about 62 or so cause I am about that age now also. Well thanks for the memories and if something comes up in this old brain of mine I will post it.
68Baldwin Apr 7th, 06, 09:37 PM Ed,Its funny you mentioned Bob Ogonowski, just talked to him about a month ago.Hes retired and living in Florida too!! He ran a Top Fuel called the Outerlimits. He had a Performance Shop in Newark NJ back then...Dan
68Baldwin Apr 7th, 06, 09:43 PM Ed,Do you remember a 62 Corvette that was sponsered by Truppi/Kling,owners Epstein & Camic? Dan
thedugan Apr 7th, 06, 10:00 PM Didn"t carmen spend many years (10) down in FL before coming back to NJ.
edd Gordon Apr 8th, 06, 01:30 PM I faintly remember that Corvette(remember Truppi Kling) -I remember Ogonowski dragster watched him rum at 1/8 mile at Oldbridge and remember his gas station he had I think it was Chancellor ave in Irvington or Newark back in the early sixties. Ogonowski was first Hot Rodder I met who did performance work when I lived in that area. I will slowly rmember others as time goes on. I Graduated Columbia High School then went to Newark State Teachers College in Union
edd Gordon Apr 10th, 06, 06:17 AM 68 Baldwin do you know where Bob Ogowski lives in Florida
68Baldwin Apr 10th, 06, 09:45 AM I believe the West Palm beach area....Email or call for phone number. My number is 908-534-1152
edd Gordon Apr 11th, 06, 07:20 AM Will call ya I used to live in West Palm Area till end of 97
68Baldwin Jul 16th, 06, 06:40 PM Just learned some more info on the Malcohm Konners family.Learned there was Malchom Konners in Paramus NJ and Konners Chevrolet in West Caldwell NJ.Dean Konner is related to Malchom Konners.Konners Chevrolet in West Caldwell NJ is still open.Seems that Malchom Konners was the HIPO Vette and COPO dealership.Went to the US30 York show and one of the dragracers on stage signing autographs had his old personal photo album of his old race cars. One showed a 62 Corvette and on the side was Malchom Konners Chevvrolet. This guy worked for the Konners family back in the 60's and 70's.
firstgenaddict Jul 17th, 06, 08:03 AM Very recently there was a discussion on Yenko.net about Brooklyn Heavy along with a few pics.
thedugan Jul 17th, 06, 09:57 AM Can you send the link to the yenco.net site. I went thru their forums but could not find anything.
68Baldwin Jul 17th, 06, 10:23 PM I started that post over there about Brooklyn Heavy.I wanted it to be a Tribute to Heavy! Dan
JOE58 Jul 19th, 06, 09:21 AM Malcohm Konner Chevrolet built some special Corvettes as late as the mid 1980s. I think it was a run of 50 cars.
EWJ Jul 20th, 06, 09:14 AM Malcohm Konner Chevrolet built some special Corvettes as late as the mid 1980s. I think it was a run of 50 cars.
In 1986 these were made, mainly an appearance package (all optioned the same, same color, except one was a Calloway version IIRC). These cars were sold as Factory Delivery to the customer with all the purchasers picking them up at the same time and driving back to NJ, much like Malcohm did in 1953/54.
no69x-44 Jul 20th, 06, 08:38 PM I'm trying to trace the "roots" of my believed to be '69 COPO. Any information on how to track these dealers and information from them would certainly be welcome.
Thanks.
68Baldwin Jul 21st, 06, 10:17 AM Rob,Got your PM....Dan
68Baldwin Aug 12th, 06, 05:23 AM Just thought I would bring this up,the Optioned MK Lemans Blue Copo is being disscussed over at the SYC site now.The New Owner that bought the car from me has shared some info...Dan
68Baldwin Aug 12th, 06, 08:52 AM Just to clarify something on the SYC,I believe Anders car originally came from MK,even though he recieved no info on his NICB report. If you know his body number and location of car when bought and shipped to Sweden then you can understand it better. If he was able to get the NICB report then it would be 100% proof positive its a MK car.I did get the NICB report on my car showing Malcolm Konners. Also body number Jude mentions is another MK car. This is for another 69 COPO 427 Camaro that came from MK,not the Mk 69 Malcolm Konners Optioned Chevelle listed on the SYC past feature cars.Hope this helps
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 17th, 08, 08:11 PM Update! Found the 2nd owner and talked to him! I was the 3rd owner, verified!! He remembers me and ever thing fits into place.I'll let Alan the new owner take it from there when he wants! Yes PAPERWORK!!!!!
no69x-44 Aug 17th, 08, 09:01 PM Dan - We exchanged a couple of emails last week. Would Monday (tomorrow) be a good day to give you a call?
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 17th, 08, 09:06 PM Yes.
PROZ11 Aug 18th, 08, 08:22 AM Malcohm Konner Chevrolet is long gone but there is still a Konner Chevrolet. It's in West Caldwell, NJ. My wife works in the office there. I believe it's owned by the 3 grandsons of Malcohm. They are nothing like the original place. Very small, low volume dealer.
.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 18th, 08, 08:55 AM PROZ11,I believe that was where Kenny Poffenberger used to work, ran a Corvair Funny Car,called Poffs Puffer .Met Kenny personally at the US30 York show in PA years ago.Kenny told me there was the Malchom Konners and Konners Chevrolet, both related. Ken worked for Konners as the service manager back then.I believe he also had a 65 Chevelle SS 396 car he raced too. Sad part Ken passed away not too long ago.By the way Malchom Konners has 2 sons, talked to both.
no69x-44 Aug 18th, 08, 09:53 AM I'm guessing that neither the New Malcohm Konner's or the old Malcohm Konner's sons have any of the older paper work for the late 60's ... :(

I've asked about it. I've asked my wife to ask about. If they have any paperwork they don't know about it or if it still exists.

I asked my wife to ask one of the owners about Kenny. The owner said, yes, Kenny did work there and knew him well. I beileved he said Kenny worked there from the early 60's until 1975. He didn't mention anything about his cars but I'm sure my wife didn't ask. The three brothers/owners there now are the sons of Mitchell who was one of the sons of Malchom. These owners are not really into the performence end of things. I doubt they ever were. The next time I'm there I'll ask them a little more about things back then.
1968Motion427SSNova Aug 18th, 08, 07:01 PM I have a guys name and vin number, with vintage pictures of a 1969 Roadster 4spd Orange Corvette with a 427 ZL1.Guy lives in Florida and sold the vette to a kid in Ft Lee NJ around 1975 I believe. This guy was personal friends of Malcohm and told me Malcohm died while out of this country on business I believe.
