View Full Version : New to forum, need traction
'68RS/SS454 Apr 3rd, 06, 07:05 PM Last year I bought a '68 RS/SS Camaro that was originally a 396 car. I recently had it dyno tested on a mustang dyno with the 454 and turbo hydromatic (3000 stall), 4.11's. I'm just under 500rwhp with street tires. My last Camaro was a '68 Z-28 and I never had traction issues to this extent. I just installed QA-1 rear shocks and will be putting the fronts on next week when they show up. I'm ready to purchase tires for street and an occasional trip to the strip. I want to stick with 15's, probably Mickey ET Streets.
My question is, what is the largest tire that will fit the rear of an otherwise stock suspension on a big block car and what else do you guys recommend to aid in hook-up? The drivetrain is stout, subframe connectors are in place. QA-1's are on the rear. Also, what is the correct offset and backspacing for wheels?
Thanks for the help!
TRS68Z Apr 4th, 06, 03:35 AM I have 295x50x15s on 7 inch ralleys. They fit completly in the wheel well but are I think the largest tire to fit with a 11 inch tread with
TRS68Z Apr 4th, 06, 03:59 AM Width not with, I think back spacing is 4.5 but not sure but I do know that
5" back spacing will rub aleast with a 50 I just pulled the 302 and went with a pump gas 468/600 HP so I should need the same info you are asking.
DOUG G Apr 4th, 06, 02:35 PM I have 285/60/15SH (sh= short, tires are 11.7"wide x 27.4 tall) American Racers ( McCreary's) on 15x8" w/ 4.5" bs Prosatrs and they do rub on hard turns and off camber bumps.
Max without rubbing is 275/60/15 on 15x8 w 4.5" bs.
275 is the overall width =10.8" wide
60 is the aspect = 28" tall
Sooo, a 28x11 should fit fine... may have to roll lip ? This is a stock width axel, drum brakes, and stock wheelwells.

pdq67 Apr 4th, 06, 05:46 PM I'm figuring an old-fashioned, real, L-60 sized "cheater-slick", like in the old days unless a good 295 drag radial will do??
Check Coker for a real cheater slick.

68rs406 Apr 5th, 06, 03:42 PM Traction aid? cal tracs, hands down. I love mine.
I would go with a mickey thompson drag radial, they hook like a slick, but ride very well. Much better than an ET street will, since they are a radial.
As for size, I run a 15X8 rallye w/ 4.5" BS, and a 275/60-15 MT drag radial, they fit within the wheel well, but not much room to spare. If the car sits real low, it may rub on the inside of the wheel well lip.
Oh yeah, welcome to team camaro :beers:

What are cal tracs?
68rs406 Apr 6th, 06, 06:45 PM Cal tracs are (sort of) like the old school traction bars youv'e seen, but totally different ;) .
Heres a link calvert racing (http://www.calvertracing.com/)
pdq67 Apr 7th, 06, 06:26 PM Personally, I like a pair of old-fashioned, tuned, "slapper-bars" that are long enough that they hit right under the middle of the front spring eyes!!
But, I'm old-school!!
