View Full Version : Which muffler clip do you like best?

philtheskipper
Apr 5th, 06, 04:35 PM
I made 3 sound clips of different mufflers on my car. Please listen to them and vote for the one you think sounds the best. Any comments are welcome, of course.

All clips were done the same way. Same setup, same microphone location, only difference was what mufflers were on the car.

I posted this poll in another forum, but some people thought I would get different results if I didn't list the muffler brands. I'm curious to see if they are correct!

If you are familiar with my previous poll, please do not reveal what kind of mufflers they are! I will post them in a few days!

Engine & Exhaust set-up...

I think I'm going to have to go with #2. It sounds deeper than #1 and louder I think too. #3 was too choppy or something for me. Be sure to tell us what muffs!!! Errr, I accidentally voted for #1, but #2 does it for me...

I wasn't going to vote, but since you wanted #2 instead of the 1st one, I voted for #2. It'll help the poll be a little more accurate.

Man that was tough...I voted for #2 but any of the three would work for me.

I could really go for #2 or 3 very easy with #1 a close 2nd.

I'll be watching to see which one's are which!

#1 sounded too muffled for me and #3 sounded kind of strange. I like #2.

#1 sounds legal..
#2 sounded like a nice street machine.
#3 sounded like a nice strip machine.

#1. Not the kind that's in your face but very stealthy. With that idle, this car will kick your arsse in a heartbeat and do it quitely. You could park in your granny's drive way and no one would raise an eyebrow.

Maybe the clips are deceiving or something, but none of these mufflers are really quiet. Numbers 1 & 2 are pretty close when it comes to volume. Number 3 is by far the loudest.

Only 40 votes? How about a few more before I reveal the mufflers tonight.

I voted #2. As others have noted, #1 sounds too muffled and #3 sounds too much like open headers, or opened exhuast dumps.

#2 sounds like my car, so....I'm gonna take a stab and say that #2 brand mufflers are "Pypes"..?

I gotta go with #3. It just says "LAY DOWN" to me....ha ha. I love that sound.

#2 by far...

1 sounds like some Summit turbo muffs
2 has got to be some 40 series Flowmasters
3 sounds like some dynomax race bullets

Here's the scoop....

#1 = Cherry Bomb Vortex Mufflers (original version)

#2 = Flowmaster Super 40 Series

#3 = Pypes Violator Mufflers

Anybody surprised? The results on the other board were similar. The Super 40's and Violators were a dead tie, with the Vortex way behind. Some people suggested that the Flowmaster name itself might of taken more votes, which is a possibility.

I personally like the Violators and Vortex better than the Super 40's. The tone on the Super 40's is nice and deep, but I think it sounds too echoed. I also was expecting them to be a little louder. They're quieter than the original 40 series. The Vortex are nice, but I wish they were a little louder. The Violators are loud as hell! I just wish they had a little bit of a deeper tone to them. They are a straight through design. They also are a dual tone muffler. You can install them in either direction. I installed mine as advertised as the loudest of the 2. As of right now, the Pypes Violators are on the car.

Feel free to comment or keep voting. I'm just gonna note the poll results before the names were revealed...

1. 6 votes
2. 21 votes
3. 26 votes

p.s. The Super 40's are available for trade. I'd like to try some other mufflers.

I voted for number 2.

Now that we know what type of mufflers were in the sound clips, Can we talk about the camshaft and engine specs? I love it. Sounds wicked!!!

I wasn't trying to keep the engine specs a secret. It's just a stock zz502 crate engine internally. It had GM roller rockers added when ordered and it has the typical exterior bolt-on upgrades such as a worked over 850 carb, MSD ignition, etc. Other than that, it's bone stock. Everyone says the zz502 needs a bigger cam, intake, etc. to wake it up, but I'm perfectly happy with how it runs as is. It pushes my heavy Chevelle under 12 secs in the 1/4 mile, and that's fast enough for me! Here's the main specs of the 502 and a pic of it in my car...

Horsepower: 502 @ 5200 RPM
Torque: 567 @ 4200 RPm
Compression Ratio: 9.6:1
Block: Gen VI Cast Iron, 4.470" Bore
Crankshaft: Forged Steel, 4.000" Stroke
Heads, Chamber Size: Aluminum Oval Port, 110cc
Valves (I/E): 2.250" / 1.880"
Camshaft, Lift (I/E): 0.527" / 0.544"
Dur. @ 0.050" (I/E): 224 / 234
Intake: Aluminum Dual Plane

It's a 71 Chevelle. Did you want pics of the motor or car? I'll put a few of each up, but if you want something specific let me know. This engine isn't a new install. It's almost 6 years old, so it isn't real clean. I'm gonna clean the engine bay this spring the best I can with the motor in the car. If I still have the car next winter, the plan is to pull the engine and spruce it up.

I picked #3. The rapp sounds most like my car, and lets people know you ain't there as a tourist.

Mine are FloPros, and sound like #2 at idle (kinda hollow and tinny), but more like #3 once you get past about 3000 rpms.

#3 all the way. Are the sound clips thru the tail pipes?

philtheskipper
Apr 13th, 06, 04:31 AM
Yes, full exhaust all the way past the rear bumper. I would really like to go with dumps right before the axle, but I kinda like the look of the 3" tips out the back.

I have the Flowmaster Delta 40 series 2 1/2 all the way back and I think it is to quiet even with a XE 294 cam. Good sound test. I'm leaning toward the Violators.

Well, we finally got a couple days of nice weather, so I got to cruise the Chevelle some. The Violator mufflers are just plain awesome! They just sound great. While at a stop light or idling down a side street, it just sounds wicked. It's fun to see everyone turn their head to see what's rumbling down the road. :waving: When you get on it, it just rips! I don't know what else to say, other than I'm very happy with these mufflers. Also, absolutly no interior drone. You can hold a conversation without having to raise your voice, unless you're getting on it.

If you like attention while driving your car, these muffs are for you!

I just wanted to jump in and make sure everyone knew these prices are an introductory special. Not to sound like a salesman, but we wanted to make the prices so attractive, it would be hard to not give Pypes a try. Obviously our motives are somewhat selfish.... :) The more of you that try and like them, the more you will be likely to recommend them to a friend. The normal list price for the mufflers is $66 and $75 respectively. Not sure how long we will continue with this pricing. Probably the end of May.

Thanks for keeping an open mind and giving the 'new kid on the block' a shot.

#1 is fine for a daily driver but that's it.
#2 is good for a nice street cruiser, but kinda mellow for a real attitude ride.
#3 is ALL attitude! a little loud for a street cruiser, but perfect for mean hot rod.
I'm split I say #2 for a street cruiser, and #3 for a weekend warrior street/strip muscle car.

Availability update. The 2.5" Violators are back in stock. The 3" Violators have been in stock all along.

Anyone who ordered them previously will get the special price of course. Anyone who didn't order them but wants them and mentions that you heard about them thru Team Camaro, can have the special price until the end of May.

I just wanted to give a heads up to anyone who has been interested in the Violator muffler. Before Phil tested his pair (3" off/off) and posted here, we felt was too loud for most of you so we made a quieter version called the Race Pro. This topic proved us wrong. In the meantime Pypes newest production runs of all the mufflers are now stainless. There's still about a pallet of the old 3" versions remaining. They are going on ebay with a $1.00reserve until they are gone. They should be a great bargain. Good luck.
