my problem is that my rear drums start to heat up so much while driving they smoke for about 15min after i park. the e-brake now goes to the floor. i have rebuilt the rear drums from springs/cylinders/shoes drums. with the car in nuetral and the e-brake off, the car will roll when you push it
any ideas on what i should do?
thanks
steve

Got the pads in around the wrong way, there is a leading edge to them, off hand I cant tell u which way around they go, the long or short part with no pad on the shoe to the direction of rotation.

Is it on one side or both? Does the car roll backward and forward without the brakes binding up? Pull the drum off the one side or both and check to make sure your primary and secondary shoes are on correctly........ Like Steptoe said they might be backwards. The Primary shoes which are the (short shoes)go towards the front and the Secondary shoes (long shoes) go towards the rear.

well it turns out that the rear frame to axle rubber line was dry rotted and when you apply the brakes pressure would be brought to the drums and not relieved when the brakes were let go because of the narrowing of the line.
this caused my rear shoes to stay engaged on the drums
so please everyone who is doing a brake job on your car or are buying that 1st gen check the condition of all lines.
but boy did that thing still move like a rocket!!

That's like driving with your e-brake on. I bet your rear drums show signs of glazing from the heat....or did you luck out?

glazed, let me tell ya dave, when i bought the drums new they were a nice gray color.
when i pulled the tires off they were almost purple from the heat.
the shop cut them while it was there.

just glad there wasn't any flames flying out the back while i was driving.

I'll leave that to the tires as I'm toasting an import!!!
