Before I drop the engine back in and bolt the fenders on I want to make sure the frame is on there straight. I took it off to sandblast and paint last summer, changed the body bushings and control arm bushings then put it back on , but how do I know its where it should be ?

There are two holes, one on each side of the front sub-frame mount bracket. Line up the hole with the hole in the body of the car with a dowel, small enough to fit into the hole. Once the holes line up and you measure from the edge of the sub-frame to a point at the rear of the car ( I use the front bolt on the leaf spring front eye bracket) and the distance on both frame rails are the same, then snug up the sub frame bolts and recheck your measurements on each side. If they are still the same, torque the frame bolts to 90 ft. lbs.

You can also do a search on "Aligning the subframe" in this forum for more info if needed.

maybe this helps give a visual too. This is for 69 but gives you an idea how to cross measure too.

Jim , so all I have to check is dimension "F" since A,B,C,D, and E shouldn't have really changed , right ?

The diagonals are most impotant, F and F1.

What I did was tie a nut to 4 lengths of fishing line, and tape the fishing line at the front edge of the 4 alignment holes (2 middle subframe mounts, 2 at torque box near front spring eyes) so the nuts were "Just" above the garage floor.

Then I used a tape measure on the floor to measure between the nuts.

The diagonals are critical.

The overall length, the longer it is the more distributor clearance you will have. There's plenty of adjustment in the fenders and rad support to compensate if the sub is further forward than spec.

I must have misunderstood the print. I thought it indicated points on the frame itself to compensate for a sprung frame but instead it must show the relation from the mounting hole in the body to the points forward on the frame. The same method used to sqare up a studwall when framing up a house. The older I get the slower my brain works.

right, exactly. There are 4 5/8" reference holes.

The front two are IN the center subframe mounting bracket, under the firewall, right next to the bolthole for the bushing.

The rear two are in the very front of the rear frame rails, near the front spring eye brackets.
