View Full Version : Which Shroud?
k9ulan Apr 10th, 06, 08:18 AM I am putting a Long Water pump 350 in my 67. It already has a big block radiator, since the 67 came stock with a short water pump, and now ive changed the radiator, i need to figute out whicj shroud to use. IU currently have a 17" fan which isprobably too big. Im thinking a shroud from a 69 sbc, or should it be from a bb since the radiator is? and whats the fan diamater on a 69? thaks
DOUG G Apr 10th, 06, 02:17 PM I have a 400 small block in my 68 with a long pump, stock size 3 core, and repro shroud. I'm running a mechanical fan which sits in the opening just fine .
JimM Apr 10th, 06, 03:54 PM I did some studying on this last year, here's what I remember:
69 (long pump) shrouds are 1" shorter than 67-68 short pump shrouds
67-68 used 23" core rads on A/C cars, 69 did not
BB's used 23" cores all 3 years, I have no info on their length.
BB's have the engine offset 1" to the pass side, I assume the fan hole in the shroud is offset as well.
The fan hole in all the shrouds is 19" in diameter, a 17" fan will fit easily, an 18" will fit if the shroud is perfectly centered on the fan.
My choice would be to use a 67 SBC A/C shroud, and shorten the fan spacer if required.
67rssstodd Apr 12th, 06, 09:02 AM I went through a radiator change a couple years ago in my 67, and for some reason, I thought I would just upgrade to a BB radiator for better cooling. Not really thinking, I went ahead and ordered a sb radiator shroud to match the wp. Turns out, the BB radiator is wider than a small block one, and the sb shroud doesn't match up with the new radiator. It's about an inch to narrow, maybe more. It still works, but if you look close, it doen't match. Oh well.
pdq67 Apr 12th, 06, 06:32 PM If you aren't worried about looks and authenticity, use/make a shroud like the Chevelles use which is just a sheetmetal cylinder the right dia. and length that you can mount in the right spot!
I'm not worrying about it b/c my BB with a S/W/P and Summits generic wide aluminum rad. positions my stock, clutch fan about right with a spacer so no shroud is needed imho..
And right, a BB shroud is moved over the needed inch.. As well as the hole up a schosh too.

RobR Apr 12th, 06, 11:34 PM How far away from the radiator should the fan be? The stock 4 blade fan in my car sit about 1/2 in and 1/2 out of the opening of the shroud. Should it be further into the shroud? I would probably have to switch to the long water pump to do that since I have the short with a 2" spacer.
JimM Apr 13th, 06, 05:44 AM half in half out is good
zdld17 Apr 13th, 06, 01:23 PM I use the 4 row 23" radiator . Ricks sells the Ep5 and Ep 35 that will fit, they do sit a little off center. I am using this with a sbc long style pump and clutch and 7 blade fan. half in and half out ,, like Jim said.
