View Full Version : Question on install of leafs and rear end
ray moore Apr 10th, 06, 08:51 AM I getting close to reassembling the rear suspension and everything else on the back end my 68.
When I removed everything I loosened the front of the leafs and lowered springs with rear end attached, then removed rear shackles.
What is the best way to reassemble? Leafs first ( easier to line up if only dealing with the leafs, but then have to lift axle over leafs ).
Or bolt axle to leafs and lift up as assembly.
Then gas tank next etc.
Anyone have a good install order of most everything in the back half of car and procedures that works well.
Thanks
Ray
DjD Apr 10th, 06, 09:45 AM Support the axle in place with jack stands, install front of springs in spring pockets and install spring pockets. Install shackles to body and install springs to shackles (leave the shackles loose until the car is on the suspension). Lower the axle onto springs and attach, attach shocks etc...
HwyStarJoe Apr 10th, 06, 10:39 AM That's exactly how I did it.
RickD Apr 10th, 06, 10:44 AM Ditto, also helpful this way because you may ( I did) have to jiggle the axle a little to square it up.
Eric Kammerer Apr 10th, 06, 10:45 AM I put the springs, rubber isolators, and anchor plates on with the rear on the floor and "upside down" (perches facing up). Then I flipped it, put on the front pockets, and rolled the whole shebang under. Rotated the front of the springs up and attached the pockets to the frame, then jacked under the pumpkin to raise it to get the shackles on.
I like to work with me right side up as much as possible, and I think it's easier to line things up this way.
Daral Apr 10th, 06, 10:47 AM I will be doing this in another month to my 67 (mono leaf springs), but since one of my leaf springs was broken, I am putting on new ones. My question is: Should the position of the rear axle on the spring, be exactly the same as the old ones or will the new springs sit differently because they are well.... new.
pdq67 Apr 10th, 06, 05:42 PM It will be the same.
And tighten everything down on the ground LAST, front AND rear......

PS., one point is that aftermarket mono-leaf replacement springs aren't double tapered like the original mono's so the pads have to be carefully cut to remove their side "lips" OR they won't fit right!
Stock mono's are 2.75" wide and thin on both ends and 2.25" wide and thick in the middle if I remember right is all..
Daral Apr 10th, 06, 07:29 PM Thanks pdq67. I bought polyurathane bushings and pads for the new monos. I don't have them yet, so without a direct comparison to my old monos, I am not sure I understand what I will need to cut.
JimM Apr 10th, 06, 07:41 PM If the pad doesn't fit over the spring, trim it so it does.
Daral Apr 10th, 06, 07:58 PM That clears it up. Thanks JimM.
ray moore Apr 11th, 06, 06:37 AM Thanks for the advice guy's
I will follow DjD's advice and procedure, it will be nice to start putting things back together. Thanks for the help.

pdq67 Apr 12th, 06, 07:08 PM Trim the "lips" that stand up on each side of the poly pads CAREFULLY by hand using a boxknife!!
CAREFULLY! here!! You can cut hell outta yourself if not careful..
