Hello guy's just looking for some opinions on what fuel pump to use.I'm running a 454 with a mild cam for street use only with a carb.Would like to hear some pluses or minuses on mechanical or electric

either pump should run it fine, just personal prefference, remember electric will run with key on ,if carb leaks by it will flood if left on vere long...

You can run an electric pump relay thru the oil pressure switch ... that way the pump does not run if the engine is not cranking or running. You can get Mallory or Holley or others running 6 to 7 psi and will not need a regulator ...I run a mallory 4110 in a 55 BelAir with mildly massaged 350 with a SMI stage 2 q-jet. I have a 96 block which was not machined for mechanical pump. On the down side, it takes a little more work to plumb, wire, and install this type of pump...And, some people have complained that some of the pumps can be rather noisy... I don't have a noise complaint about the mallory. And, to be clear, run the relay thru an oil pressure switch is you elect to go this route. Summt has everything you will need ...

Thanks for the info sounds like either way will be fine .Already bought a holly black but they seem to have a noise problem from what I've read so leaning toward mechanical.

There is nothing wrong with a strock pump for even modified street use.
There is a saying about crome for show not for race...the same principle apples to many stock items from cams/lifters/rockers, fuel pumps, radiators, water pumps, dizzys etc
The early Camaros whereover built in so many areas...but brand marketing propanda sucks so many in to believe the orginal is in adiquate, or to be someone u must have this aftermarket item with our brand name on it!!
Egos..
The only thing I recommend is high vol/press oil pump over std.
Its all BS for the shareholders pocket.
Street car = yrs and miles of reliablity = stock items
Race car = 1 season , hopfully..even then each race oil change etc, after each meet complete strip and check/replace anything suspect. Often high end pumps etc.

Go thru forums...notice guys with electical, cooling problems often have had a problem then, go to aftermarket stuff, and still have same problem and compounded the orginal problem with new ones with bad curves, fan shrouds, without fixing the orginal.

Take the std water pump for instance...that thing outputs far more water than needed...same for the radiator. hence the need to restrict water flow at the themostat.
Same goes for the fuel pump capacity...and the added advantage it has very few parts to go wrong and little wear.
An electric pump...wiring, earths, own motor, bearings, then driver for the pump...then the pump mechanics.
Bottom line
Street car KISS (keep it simple stupid)

Unless you're well over 500hp, a mechanical pump will work just fine in a street car; no need to go through the plumbing/mounting/wiring hassle that comes with a properly-installed electric fuel pump.
:beers:
