I'd like to consider running some unusual hot rod equipment that can be easily bolted on/bolted off (forreturning to stock).
Is there any problem running a Vertex mag on a stocker engine? Comments please.

I ran one for three years a long time ago. Only thing I remember as being a headache was adjusting dwell as a constant battle due to points burning (ran full voltage).

There is a company that sells an HEI distributor with a cap that looks like a Vertex mag. Great cool factor and no headaches.

What about the loss of vacuum advance? What will this do to a street application?

If were talking a stock big block in a light car you will never miss it. 283 in a sled yes it will adversley effect overal performance. A vacuum advance tailors the spark to engine demand giving you optimal street performance. Racers don't use vacuum advance because most radically camed cars idle at or near the upper limits of the vacuum can's use anyway.
