I am having a weird problem and am not sure the cause, I thought it was my voltage regulator, as I have had to replace it twice in less than 3 years. Here is what is happening. My headlights & interior lights are going dim when I accelerate my engine, then brighten when I let the car idle. Sometimes, even at idle, the lights dim & brighten. My battery is being charged, as it is not showing weakness & my car starts fine. My last voltage regulator stuck and my battery was drained. The engine also is not running as smooth at idle as it was. My question is does anybody know what could be going on?? All my ground wires (copper) appear to be fine. My voltage regulator is working but not like it should, could it be bad or could the alternator be the cause?? Could adjusting my carb to make the car idle better help?? I am at a loss, hope someone can help. Thanks alot.

I need a voltage reading, across the battery, at idle and at 2000 or so rpm.

Do you have the regulator grounded?
Check voltage from the metal body O(not the painted cover) of the regulator to the case of the alternator. If it's not ZERO, you have a bad ground either at the reg or possibly the entire radiator support.

lemme know what you find.

I dumped the orginal alternator/regulator yrs ago....well not dumped but put in storage.
The regulator remains for 'show only' as does the buzzer.
Get a late model self regulating alternator...they are far more reliable.

awww, comeon steptoe... with the addition of a wells electronic regulator, the original setup is as good as any, if the amperage can support your car
